WHO on earth thought three-pronged forks were a good idea? I’ve had a terrible time trying to eat my cake.

Well it’s not actually my cake but we won’t go into that …

This isn’t one of those purpose made pastry type dainty fork things. I think it’s from a 1970’s set of cutlery that I’ve inherited from my mother. In fact, give me a minute and I’ll treat you all to a picture of it!

I’ve had a terrible time trying to eat cake - crumbs everywhere, much dropping of forkfuls, great difficulty spearing/pronging, significant reduction in plate to mouth speed. I should’ve used a shovel, um I mean spoon …

Is that a cake fork though? Mine look a bit different.

Whose cake have you eaten?

Cocolapew · 31/10/2021 20:30

Everyone knows you eat cake with a teaspoon.

I only eat with three pronged forks. The key is that the prongs are not too long (yours look a little long to my keen eye). Keep going with it and honestly you will find it’s the best way to eat. 🍴 🍰

CalamariGames · 31/10/2021 20:35

Reminds me of Sheldon on Big Bang Theory who was against 3 pronged forks since they are really tridents.

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 20:51

No it’s not specifically a cake fork, I don’t have any of them (although I might invest in some). It’s the first thing that came to hand in my cutlery drawer.

I didn’t know that @Cocolapew - I can see I have great gaps in my cake eating education :(.

And I’ve never seen Big Bang Theory but Sheldon sounds like a sensible type.

Have you tried picking the cake up with your hands, as prehistoric people would have had to do

WorraLiberty · 31/10/2021 20:57

I love the thread title 🤣🤣

Just shovel it in with your hands OP, that's what I do. You get to lick it off your fingers when you're feeling sad the cake has gone.

Morgantowers · 31/10/2021 21:02

A cake fork has shorter and flatter prongs so actually is just a teaspoon with holes.

Morgantowers · 31/10/2021 21:03

To add, your fork looks like the kind they have in Thai restaurants - is the handle cylinder shape and very difficult to hold?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 31/10/2021 21:04

A fork should have four tines.

I'm sorry for your cake related troubles. It saddens me.

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 21:15

Thank you @StrychnineInTheSandwiches, I feel you are a kindred spirit and are taking my trials as seriously as they ought to be taken :)

Here is the handle. And as an aside, I don’t think I’ve ever taken pictures of a fork before Grin

You need to practise, practise practise, @Wendyer. You may need more cake.

groundcontroltomontydon · 31/10/2021 21:25

Three-pronged forks are the devil's work Halloween Grin
(Check no one's looking and lick the plate, we won't tell)

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 21:38

I will practise @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius, I owe it to myself to do the best I can.

Was I meant to use a plate @groundcontroltomontydon Shock

Is it a fish fork?

CheshireChat · 31/10/2021 21:59

No one will persuade me it's easier to eat cake with a fork than a teaspoon Wink.

DaisyDozyDee · 31/10/2021 21:59

Is that Viners cutlery? I think my family had the same set (also with useless 3-pronged forks).

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 22:01

No, it’s not a fish fork. I do have some of them though, also inherited from dm, and never used! I always forget I have them. Does anyone actually bother to use fish forks these days?

OP posts:
DynastyBarry · 31/10/2021 22:01

You need a cake fork. Oyster forks have 3 tines (cake forks can too but they have a wider tine shaped for cutting)

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 22:02

Oh Daisy - it is Viners, I just had a look!

Wendyer · 31/10/2021 22:03

I’m wondering about fish forks now! Never have I spent so much time thinking about forks! Shall I start a thread asking if anyone ever uses them?!

Ooh I used to have cutlery with a similar pattern. I did pay extra to have all four prongs on my forks though!
