Hi,

DS accidentally stabbed me it eye with a corner of a sticker packet. I've got a red scratch across the white. I can feel it and my eye feels a bit watery but I wouldn't say I'm in pain. I can still see out if it.

Do I just let it do it's thing? Call the GP in the morning. I don't really want to go to a&e as I can't imagine they would do much.

Eyes heal really quickly. I lost a quarter of my cornea last year thanks to my toddler. Worst pain I've ever known but within 24 hours it was almost better! If you're not really in pain you don't need to be seen by a doctor as they won't be able to do anything anyway.

I would try and get an appointment with an optician tomorrow. They can put dye in your eye to see how bad the scratch is and have the equipment to check it properly. If you need antibiotics eye drops etc they can prescribe them. Doctors won’t be able to do anything.

This happened to me the other week with a splinter from my eyeliner pencil.

It didn't do anything and it never occurred to me to contact my GP or A&E Confused

If you wake up with any discharge tomorrow, use an eyewash for a couple of days, otherwise just leave it alone.

Was also going to say they heal up pretty fast . I scratched mine with a pair of scissors a couple of years ago and it was healed up fine within a week - because it was metal I did go to optician and got eye drops but was fine . Surprisingly not that painful either - think optician was more surprised than me as she could see two wiggly scratches that just missed my pupil 😳

Thanks everyone, I'll see what is like in the morning.

I thought Doctors/a&e as I was mostly in a panic I had done real damage and I didn't know if eyes were special when it came to injuries

Yeah mine did this too, I did go to the docs, unfortunately he gave me drops which I was allergic to, which made rhe whole thing a nightmare. I’d just let it be unless it gets worse,

silveryslade · 31/10/2021 16:41

Ring in advance for docs etc. They can give you the lowdown.

angelopal · 31/10/2021 16:43

Go to optician as doctor will not have they equipment they have to check it.

Cattenberg · 31/10/2021 16:56

I once managed to poke my eye on a sharp twig, It was really, really uncomfortable. The next day, the sight in that eye was still blurred, so I made an emergency optician appointment.

The optician could only see a small scratch on my conjunctiva and said that any scratch to my sclera must have healed already. He said that my vision should go back to normal within a day or two. It did!

Stupidly, I forgot to take my prescription glasses to my appointment, as I don’t wear them very often. I was gently told that bringing them would have been helpful.

SkepticalCat · 31/10/2021 17:32

See if you can get a minor eye conditions (MECS) appointment, for them to check it out.

Depends what kind of scratch it is. I did mine with a seed head and need antibiotic drops and a referral. I then had an emergency open appointment in case my eyelid regrazed it - apparently its eminently possible I'd get it checked out

GenderAtheist · 31/10/2021 17:41

Defo go to the optician. You will probably get seen the same day, they have specialist equipment and know a lot more about it than your average GP.

Skippingabeat · 31/10/2021 17:44

I've had this 3 times. Twice it was bad and had to use antibiotic drops (one of those times turns out I was allergic to that antibiotic which made it much worse!), and once it was milder (daughter scratched it when she was a toddler) and healed on its on.

Try to keep your eye closed so it doesn't get infected, and never rub it. If it's worse within a day or two, better see a dr.

Minor injuries unit saw me last year for corneal abrasion. Antibiotics were prescribed and did the trick. Worth getting it checked over OP.

Motherofmonsters · 01/11/2021 19:15

Just an update - I rang the opticians they said they don't look at it and go through the doctors/111. I filled out an econsult this morning and they gave me an appointment for 6pm. I saw a paramedic, had drops in my eye and prescription for an ointment.

Thanks for the update. Glad you are on the mend and the antibiotic should do the trickSmile
