Fancy sharing your current playlists? I'd like to freshen mine up. I'm after some warm autumnal feels.

What sort of thing do you like? I

bestcattoyintheworld · 31/10/2021 10:45

I'm loving Pergolesi's Stabat Mater

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/10/2021 10:48

thank you both. I will lend an ear to most stuff - I draw the line at Schoenberg though Grin.
Current playlist is quite early 20th century heavy - Poulenc, Debussy, Price. Will share more details if anyone wants to refresh their own playlist!

OK! I listen either to a lot of Arvo Pärt type stuff or baroque. St Matthew Passion, Bach's double violin concerto, Marcello, Telemann.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/10/2021 11:00

bach violin double is already on the list Grin. Any specific pieces I should check out from the others?

Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel. Marcello oboe concerto. Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard ensemble.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/10/2021 11:13

thanks again @bestcattoyintheworld and @KeflavikAirport. I have listened to (a few minutes of) and added the Tabakova Cello Concerto and Stabat Mater, and shall work my way through the other suggestions.

I came to recommend Bach concerto for four harpsichords. It's actually a keyboard version of Vivaldi's concerto for four violins. It's so gorgeous.
Also seen it done as four pianos.
If you like Bach check out the Bach Society of the Netherlands on YouTube, they are currently working on a project called "All of Bach" which does what it says on the tin.
The musicians are brilliant and the videos are really high quality.
There are also some behind the scenes ones which are really interesting.

I love the Baroque period.

John Tavener

For this time of year, as swans & geese migrate to their overwintering grounds, there's Rautavaara's Cantus Arcticus. The last movement includes the sound of real Whooper Swans. I find it very moving.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 31/10/2021 14:32

@KeflavikAirport love your taste!

I am a big fan of Russian music. Borodin probably my favourite.

Also Aaron Copland, wind orchestra stuff specifically

LittleMachine · 31/10/2021 14:53

I'm currently in love with The Piano Guys version of Beethoven's Five Secrets.

SammyScrounge · 31/10/2021 15:10

Vaughan Williams

londonmummy1966 · 31/10/2021 15:28

I'm about to revamp mine for the Christmas season so I'm thinking Corelli Christmas Concerto, Winter from Seasons, some of the first part of the Messiah, Daquin Noels - not very original but I'm after something a bit nostalgic at the moment.

SunnyLeaf · 31/10/2021 15:37

Following this!

gogohm · 31/10/2021 16:05

Gounod is currently who I'm exploring, my dd got my onto him

KeflavikAirport · 31/10/2021 16:43

Bit of Vivaldi mandolin:

or John Dowland:

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/10/2021 16:44

thanks so much to you all Flowers. Can I be cheeky and put in a request for specific pieces? In case anyone is interested I find the following have a nice autumnal vibe:

Vaughn Williams - Six Studies in English Folksong
Clarke - Morpheus
Debussy - Le Tombeau de Couperin
Ray Chen - A New Satiesfaction
JS Bach - Concerto for Oboe and Violin
Barber - Violin Concerto
Poulenc - Flute Sonata
Purcell arr Pluhar - Timon of Athens Curtain Tune

@londonmummy1966 for your Winter/Christmas refresh may I suggest
Coleman - First Day of Kwanzaa for something a little different but still seasonal? Plus weirdly, Glazunov's Autumn Bacchanal from the Seasons, which I think sounds far more Christmassy than autumnal.

Depends how strict you are with your definitions of classical, but Michael Nyman's score for The Piano hits the spot for this time of year for me.

KeflavikAirport · 02/11/2021 11:19

@Ieatmarmite just listening to the Rautavaara now, it's gorgeous, thanks!

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 02/11/2021 11:25

Lovely at any time of year (and apologies if it is considered a bit naff) but I love Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring in Autumn.

TheShadoutCrepes · 02/11/2021 11:32

Poulenc’s Piano Concerto in C sharp minor is giving me the tingles atm.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/11/2021 19:24

thanks again folks.
not normally a Copeland fan, but the Moderato and Very Slow pieces from the Appalachian suite are lovely, and hitting the autumnal spot. Saving the Poulenc for winter, I think!
