Holiday in Canaries end of January - what to expect?

Haven't booked anything yet, but considering a week away, last week of January in Tenerife or Lanzarote. What sort of temperature could we expect weather-wise? Would all bars and restaurants be open, or would it be slim pickings? Any advice about specific resorts also welcome. Thanks!

There's a guy on tiktok that works in travel in Lanzarote that's worth following. He says it's much busier there than normal.

We went to Fuertaventura for Christmas once. Warm but needed a heated pool. Wasn't really lie in sun all day weather but we got a car and ventured out and it was good weather for that.

We went in the sea on Christmas day .... it took a while to get in but I was determined! OK once we were in.

We've been in January couple of times - weather varied quite a lot between 18-26 degrees but it does drop quite suddenly as soon as the sun goes down so you'll need warmer clothes for evenings.

It can vary, but the weather should be mostly good. Maybe identify a few things you can do if it's not 'lazing around in the sun' weather, eg go see the Lanzarote volcano park.

YY to a previous suggestion to be prepared for the evenings to be cooler, especially if you want to still eat and drink in outside restaurants and bars. The sea is bearable, we've been a few times in January/February and swum/ snorkelled for a bit.

Would all bars and restaurants be open, or would it be slim pickings Probably at least 3/4 open, lots of choice, it's not high season, but it's not dead either.

To maximise the chance of the best weather, you want to stay in the south of either island, but avoid Las Americas on Tenerife if you aren't party animals. Costa Adeje is where all the nicer AI hotels are and Los Cristianos is more family orientated. If you don't want to go to a 'resort town' best look for a villa outside this area, but then you have to be prepared to drive everywhere. You can get a good idea about the area by looking at Google Streetview.

Lanzarote is mostly quieter, with only Costa Teguise and the new part of Playa del Carmen (east of the Marina) being 'resort town'. Playa Blanca in the south is quieter. We stayed in a small villa in PB that was five minutes walk from the Marina and beach and had a half decent supermarket and nice bakery a couple of minutes walk away.

Go for a hotel with a heated pool

ovenchips · 31/10/2021 07:08

Second/third the booking somewhere with a properly heated pool suggestion. I went to Lanzarote in Feb and choose hotel based on that - and v pleased I did. Hotel had a number of pools but only heated its main one. What a difference between them! My DC who never feels the cold, only tried the other pools once as got v cold. But the heated one was really lovely for us all.

We went in February once and it poured with rain for 4 full days.

we used to go a lot at feb half term. we had drizzle one day but others were fine. fleece and jeans at night, shorts during the day. need a heated pool. most bars and restaurants open and you didnt need to book - though i'm told you have to queue/book them in summer
