Childhood Myopia - corrective lens or not?

I’ve just come back from my daughters annual eye test and her sight has changed from being long sighted to short sighted. She is now +1.00. Her opticians have recommended Ortho K corrective lens to slow the progression of the myopia.

It is £150 for the assessment and fitting and then £50 a month for the lens. My daughter is 10 and like many children over lockdown her screen time had vastly increased with online schooling. She has also been diagnosed with dyslexia and visual stress so often uses an iPad or chrome book in school so she can keep up with the rest of the class.

I’m concerned about progressive myopia and the impact on her long term but the cost is significant,
I’m on a low income and it equals a weeks shopping for me! Obviously if she will benefit from the lens long term it’s the right choice but she isn’t keen at all to wear lens.

Has anyone tried these with their dc? Did they tolerate them and was it worth it?

Oh and she has been delighted to have her glasses for close work, her best friend wears glasses all the time and I certainly have no issues with her wearing them!

  • or - 1 is really mild. Is it the opticians store that recommended the lenses? Sounds like they're trying to get you to spend unnecessarily.

@haba Yes it was the opticians, they said about progressive myopia and the earlier the intervention the better.

Thing is they know I’m on a limited income as I’m registered there too and get free eye tests.

Has anyone got any experience of SightGlass D.O.T lenses for glasses?
My DD had her eyes retested today and she has deteriorated in 9 months.
I am very myopic which was fine until variofocals loomed. Our Optometrist had suggested Ortho K previously but she's only 11 and too young I think for contacts. The results for the SightGlass look really good.

Earlgreyandcake · 30/10/2021 17:29

Please don't spend your money on the D.O.T lenses. There are good reasons these aren't available on the nhs. Optometrists selling them do get good bonuses ...

The thing is that on average a child with myopia will lose -0.50 in vision very 12 months until they reach adulthood and their eyes stabilise. Adulthood is 18-22 as not everyone stabilises the day they turn 18.

It’s normal for their eyes to get a bit more myopic each year. I would only be concerned if it’s faster than average.

Make sure she goes outside every day, particularly over the coming winter. Natural light is good for her eyes.

MillyMollyMardy · 30/10/2021 18:16

She's gone from -1.0 to -2.0 in 9 months and she's only 11, should I expecrt her to become very myopic?
I ended up at -8.5 and have recently had lens replacements partly due to struggling with the prescription and also due to cataracts.

@Earlgreyandcake

You can use voucher towards annual lenses but not daily or monthly lenses. You won't then get voucher for specs
Ok Thank you - That makes sense
