It would appear that it is over, my relationship with my one cup of ground coffee a day

Is there a decent decaff ground coffee for cafetieres around.

I am bored, bored, bored having one cup and one cup only and lying awake at three in the morning, wondering whether I unplugged the iron last week or the kettle in 1982 for that matter.

Recommendations please. If there are any to recommend.

I would say to get a decent grinder and buy beans. I saw a programme recently that inferred all ground coffee contains cockroaches and their faeces. It's put me off big time. As for the iron... ditch it.

Before I gave up coffee completely, I found Taylor’s Decaffé ground coffee to be pretty good.

Ps if you’re sensitive to caffeine, watch out for chocolate consumption in the evenings, especially plain chocolate.

Are you sure it’s the coffee and not the menopause?

knittingaddict · 30/10/2021 10:54

The decaff options for the nespresso are excellent. Caffeine seems to trigger my acid reflux, so I went largely caffeine free a year or so ago. The decaff nespresso pods taste just like normal coffee.

Decaff tea is a big disappointment, but I persevere.

BlueFlavour · 30/10/2021 10:54

I only drink decaf ground coffee. Co op is nice.

Good point. My worst menopause symptom was being awake at 3 in the morning, worrying about anything and everything.

My mum had to move to decaff a few years ago.

She cannot find decent decaff tea at all.

Regarding decaff coffee - she likes the individual coffee filters - either Rombout, Waitrose or M&S (approx £2-75 for 10 - we all do groan at the plastic waste). If she is making a pot - then the Taylors decaff. I try to encourage my teenager with decaff and he uses the Nespresso decaff pods.

What neither of them have liked are the Taylors decaff coffee bags. (I also dont like the Italian coffee coffee bags). So I am taking our remaining ones into school - the teachers will drink anything!!

Raw Bean decaf is lovely, tastes like regular coffee. I get it from Waitrose online. I've tried lots of decafs since any caffeine after midday started to affect my sleep 🙄 and this is my favourite.

But I also agree it could be hormonal. I've been popping wide awake at 5 am the last few nights because my period is due in the next few days. I'm 42 and this has been the pattern for maybe 6-8 months or so, so long enough to see it IS a pattern.

whensmynexthol1day · 30/10/2021 11:17

L'or decaf is the best I've had if you can find it. I've been on decaf for years so tried a lot!

As sure as I can be, my ovaries had pretty much packed up and left the building in 2014, had serious cancer treatment in 2015, and then everything stopped hot sweats, insomnia, it was only during lockdown that whilst I was shielding that DH got into the habit of bringing me up a cup of coffee every morning.

I have knocked coffee on the head this week and whilst I still struggle to switch off, it will happen, but caffeine was unpleasant bed fellow and just lay there prodding me every time I even thought about drifting off.

Yes there is. We drink Taylors decaff. It comes in a blue bag. We love it.

I really like the taste of PG Tips decaff tea. It has more taste than most caffeinated teas IMO. I always drink decaff hot drinks in the evening.

cortex10 · 30/10/2021 11:44

Illy decaffeinated beans are the ones we buy - good flavour but not cheap.

RacketeerRalph · 30/10/2021 12:19

Union preground decaff is pretty good.

But I much prefer fresh ground with my sage grinder (yes it's £200 but it's worth it) and then Swiss water decaff or Murano decaff from these guys.

Wbeezer · 30/10/2021 12:23

Waitrose Peruvian decaff is pretty good.
We tend to make a DIY half caff or third caff blend as a compromise.

MotherWol · 30/10/2021 16:13

I’m the only one who drinks decaf in our house so I get a bag of posh coffee from Pact and work through it slowly. It’s about a tenner a bag but I don’t have to share it so it’s my little treat. The Christmas blend is lovely.

Couchto5ktowine · 30/10/2021 16:20

Agree with @whensmynexthol1day there’s been extensive decaf testing in our household and L’Or is by far the best

RE: tea

I've just found 'rooibos' caffeine free tea. Has a lovely flavour - worth a reccomendation Smile

RhubarbCustardy · 30/10/2021 16:27

Decaff is full of chemicals to make it decaff. If you're only having one in the morning, the caffeine effects should've worn off by the evening surely? Lots of people I know are having trouble sleeping at the moment. Not helpful I know but I could drone on about sleep hygiene and routine etc blah blah but your questiin was about coffee so I won't 😉
