Oh fuckity fuck - no hallowe’en costume. PLEASE HELP 🥺

So I have a hallowe’en party to go to tomorrow evening. Being hosted by a new US friend who is super passionate about hallowe’en.

I was going to go as June from the Handmaid’s Tale.and was a bit smug that I had found a costume on Amazon with dress, cape, scarf and ‘wings’.

And it arrived yesterday after a 6 week lead in time and, oh my, it bears no resemblance to anything vaguely related to the Handmaid’s Tale. The cape is a huge shiny red zip up raincoat, the ‘wings’ are a circular piece of white cotton with two ribbons tangling down and, despite the cape being monster size, I cannot even step into the accompanying dress.

Sp, please, can anyone suggest anywhere in London I can get some form of costume that will do for a hallowe'en party. At the moment, I’ll take anything going - whether a high end costume hire shop or a supermarket / similar offering.

I am a dumpy size 16, 5’2” woman in her 50s. So not aiming for sex on legs - just something that shows I’ve made a bit of an effort.

I’m in London so can readily access costume shops etc in London. The party is tomorrow (Saturday) evening

Sainsburys do costumes for adults.

Red dress

White wig- b and m bargains has one. Paint half of it black

Red lippy, white face = cruella deVille?

Or
White shirt, long skirt, traditional umbrella, hat with flower in it, red ribbon as a neck tie, navy suit jacket. Big bag. = Mary poppins

Mino brow, flower Garland head band. Black full skirt, red top, red cape/shawl. Red lippy. Frieda Khalo

Buy a black dress? At least you'll have something you can potentially get more wear out of! New Look or Primark would be where I'd look for cheap options on the high street. Alternatively, if you can order before 11 tonight, Next will either deliver to a store by noon tomorrow (free) or can courier it to you tomorrow.

Get a pack of mini cereal boxes, stab a plastic knife into them, attach to clothing/hat (zipties?), you are a "cereal killer".

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 29/10/2021 22:18

Sorry just went back and read your description of the costume properly! That sounds awful!

Zombie in a red anorak?

TheWordOfBagheera · 29/10/2021 22:18

Blue denim dungarees, yellow t-shirt, black gloves (and black frames round glasses if you can) - minion.

Brown dressing gown and a cheap kids lightsaber - ObiWan from Star Wars.

@Woeismethischristmas

Lots of jewellery and go as a pirate. Boots, tight trousers baggy white shirt over a vest. Lots of black eyeliner and a bandana if you can’t find a pirate hat.
Thing with these fab ideas is I have none of the basics- no tight trousers, no baggy white shirt, no jewellery - though I can rock the black eye liner . So I would be runnng round London like a blue arsed fly trying to get various items from various places for an outfit.

Myrtle I was going to suggest the famous West End costume hire place Angels, but it looks like they're currently online only so there wouldn't be time for tomorrow night, sorry.

Thatsplentyjack · 29/10/2021 22:23

Do you have face paints. What about a zombie? My ds has left it until the very last minute as usual and we are going to rip, dirty and bloody up some old clothes and paint him like a zombie.

[quote Mycatismadeofstringcheese]Some ideas in here (although not all of them look last minute)

Purple balloons tied to t-shirt. Bunch of grapes?

yomellamoHelly · 29/10/2021 22:25

red tracksuit + black facemask or green tracksuit

RedSquirrelRoar · 29/10/2021 22:26

Spider? Black/dark top and leggings/trousers. Stuff 2-3 pairs of opaque black tights with newspaper and pin to back to make ‘legs’. Connect the legs with string/a strip of fabric and make a loop to put round your finger/wrist.

If you have hardly any base clothes, why don't you tell us what you do have, we could work from there?

Turkishangora · 29/10/2021 22:31

White dress, chuck a load of fake blood on it, fashion some sort of veil out of a bit of white material, fake blood again, draw fangs on and blood drips with red lipstick. Dracula's bride.

My lockdown weight gain clothes are leggings (black & navy) with a range of White Stuff / Seasalt tunics. I have T shirts in various colours, including black.

I have summer beach kaftan style swimming costume cover ups.

I have a navy linen shift dress for work.

I have some patterned linen summer dresses from next.

Various cardigans and hoodies.

I cringe typing this up. I have let myself go and this shows in the lack of a meaningful wardrobe.

Look on You Tube for how to draw a make up Halloween spider.
Wear ordinary party clothes (hopefully you’ve got some) then draw the spider on your face with eyebrow pencil.

Woeismethischristmas · 29/10/2021 22:37

What sort of stuff do you have in your wardrobe and we can work with it?

That's not a crazy difficult wardrobe.

If you have any tunics in a dark colour/autumnal pattern you could wear those with the appropriate dark leggings, a witches hat and ideally a cape (I bought 2m of fabric from a fabric shop which is black net with gold spiders webs on it, and did about 3 stitches in each corner to sew ribbons on. You could also safety bin a single ribbon or two ribbons in the right place to avoid any sewing.

You can get witches hats which aren't black, and if you can do a cape then I think the costume underneath won't really matter.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 29/10/2021 22:41

I had my graduation gown and mortar board in a box in the garage

OP posts:
Gladioli23 · 29/10/2021 22:41

PS I reckon the navy linen shift dress could be used as a base if the tunics aren't the right colours.

villainousbroodmare · 29/10/2021 22:42

I would go looking for a black dress. One item. Vampy makeup, a fang or two and you're there. Plus you can wear it again.
