Metal straws........

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2021 21:18

Oh Mumsnet Hive mind I throw my search out to you.....
I am seeking metal straws that are thin enough to punch through a Capri Sun pack.
DH takes Capri suns out and about while doing his hobby (I won't say what as it might be outing.... nah - not really he's a Rally driver). He is very fed up with the paper straws because they are not fit for purpose (ie they won't ACTUALLY go through the foil pouch) and we are looking for metal ones to use.

HOWEVER I can't find any that look thin enough and wondered if there was anyone out there who had solved my probably quite niche issue.

Would he be driving? Would not suggest a metal straw... or "eye skewer" as my sister (works in a&e) called them... especially a thin one...

FOJN · 29/10/2021 21:26

I agree with PP, a thin metal straw seems like a recipe for disaster. I'd suggest decanting the drink into a drinks bottle before he leaves home.

Brusca · 29/10/2021 21:28

Get him a reusable cup he can use one handed (Contigo are fab) and he can either decant his pouches or make up squash.

Mykittensmittens · 29/10/2021 21:30

Bloody lethal things. Find a suitable plastic straw and then don’t dispose of it, wash it, in the same way you would a metal one. Or suggest he keeps a cocktail stick to hand with which he can puncture the carton and put in the paper straw.

Or perhaps suggest a slightly different portable drink. Given than caprisun are almost entirely non-recyclable anyway, they’re a poor environmental choice, and nothing more than squash in terms of nutrition. A reusable bottle would make more sense on all fronts.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2021 21:30

Sorry, I wasn't clear......
He wouldn't be using the straw while driving as that is 3 or 4 minutes of sheer terror and white knuckles (not for him so much but for his navigator) but instead while sitting in the paddock /service area waiting for his turn to go out on stage again.

These ones look about right www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Cocktail-Glasses-Mason-Cleaning/dp/B019YXH5AG

SmurfetteBlue · 29/10/2021 21:32

I have a collapsible metal straw and that's quite thin on one side. Not sure if thin enough for Capri sun though as I haven't had one of those for years!

SmurfetteBlue · 29/10/2021 21:33

It's quite handy too as it come in a little case with a keyring so I never forget it!

RobertsWonder · 29/10/2021 21:34

Just some small scissors to cut the corner off and he drinks it through the opening? Or refillable bottles with squash in to cut down on the plastic packaging anyway?

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2021 21:36

Mykittensmittens I totally agree on the environmental aspect of Capri Sun - most of the time he uses a metal bottle for water etc. We don't drink squash at any other time so a bottle for eventing would be a waste as it would go weird in the time between rallies (its an expensive hobby so he is out maybe 4 times a year)
I shall put a cocktail stick in his rally bag next time he's out and once this current batch of CS is gone we shall find another drink for him.

I’d go for a decent water bottle (contigo are good, or camelbak), and squash unless there is a compelling reason to keep using Capri sun. Less waste overall, more flexibility on flavour/amount so win-win.

Theunamedcat · 29/10/2021 21:39

Cocktail straw from amazon they are shorter than regular and look thinner

neededafart · 29/10/2021 21:40

Get the Capri suns that are the larger size and they have a screw cap ?

BarbaraofSeville · 29/10/2021 21:48

Eh? Just buy a bottle of squash and put it in a reusable bottle. We get the M&S or Waitrose cordial because it's the only one that doesn't have artificial sweetners in and it costs all of £1.50 and lasts at least a year, possibly two because we don't drink very much.

I can't imagine you get many Capri Suns for that amount of money and then you have the cost and inconvenience of sourcing this fit for purpose straw.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/10/2021 21:49

To be clear, squash doesn't go off in a few months or even a year or two.

RacketeerRalph · 29/10/2021 21:52

I use a fork. Pierce the foil with a fork, use paper or bamboo straw. The fork lives in my glove box and has endless uses!

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2021 22:03

BarbaraofSeville that has not been my experience - I find that, once open, a bottle of squash soon goes a funny colour and tastes weird. My experience is largely based on Ribena though.
However I now have several solutions to hand so thank you to everyone who gave me some ideas - the life of the wife of a rally driver is filled with such excitements!
(I used to be his navigator until we had kids)

The ones they sell in Costa are pretty thin...

RestingPandaFace · 29/10/2021 22:13

If it has to be Capri sun get the bigger one with a sports top.

DS has carton smoothies in his lunch box and I poke a cocktail stick into the plastic containing the paper straw so he pierces the hole with the cocktail stick but then used the paper straw to drink.

Impatientwino · 29/10/2021 22:30

Hope that makes sense I've had 3 glasses of fizz! Grin

Gladioli23 · 29/10/2021 22:33

Ribena (specifically the low sugar one) does go funny if you don't drink it. Other squashes and cordials do not. I don't know why, and I still love ribena in spite of its flaws.

ParadiseLaundry · 29/10/2021 22:57

I bought some from Savers a while ago and yesterday used one in a Capri sun after the paper straw turned mushy.
