Tell me about Ragdolls

Morning all, I was surprisingly offered a Ragdoll kitten yesterday and have had a restless night on what to do! Thought I would turn to the knowledgeable cat owners of Mumsnet for advise...

Current situation, in the home me, my DC(16) and British Shorthair(5)

What is this breed like, my BSH is wonderful, he is the perfect cat and worried that another will be so different from him.

@CreepySpider mine is obviously a needy one 😂 It’s nice though, I like the company.

Mylee · 30/10/2021 14:03

We have one. She’s very independent and stubborn, hates affection of any kind and she’s a really fussy eater, reading what other peoples are like I think she might be brokenGrin She lives with our 3 dogs and she’s definitely the boss of themGrin

Haha @Ellmau that was mine to a T. Lovable, floppy, handsome but not very clever. Loved him.

AllySmelly · 30/10/2021 15:51

@onelittlefrog Yes ours was stolen 🙁

HoldingTheDoor · 30/10/2021 15:54

I used to have one. He'd been abandoned(yes, really) and in very poor condition when we got him as he'd been living on the streets for a few weeks. They're definitely not cats who should go outside. They are very likely to be stolen and they're also rather dim so need to be indoor cats. Mine escaped the garden a few times. He didn't get very far but he'd freeze in the face of danger.

He was gorgeous and completely nuts. He was full of personality and a lot of fun. He liked affection but he definitely wasn't a lap cat. He never once sat on my lap, but I think it wouldn't have been comfortable for him anyway as he was so big.

I wouldn't get another unless we found another rescue, but that's only because I don't think they're any more special than your average moggy. He was wonderful, as all my cats have been but because he was him iyswim, not because he was a ragdoll. They are beautiful though and I see no reason to avoid them unless you don't want to deal with an indoor cat.

I have one, and a BSH. Both are indoor cats.

Very different in some ways (Ragdoll would be carried around 25/8 if we could, BSH will contort himself in to 5 different directions at once unless you pick him up in the one specific way he'll tolerate) but both are very sweet and loving.

My Ragdoll isn't huge at all, just a little bit bigger than a 'normal' cat. She is absolutely thick as mince though, bless her.

I certainly would have no hesitation in getting another one in the future.

Kotatsu · 30/10/2021 15:56

Beautiful, affectionate, not the sharpest tool in the box.

ROFL - yes, this is pretty much my two :D

Although it's obviously affection on their terms - so girlcat demands to lounge on my lap while I watch TV in the evening so I can brush her. Boy cat wanders the house yelling when he wants us, and particularly in the morning when it's breakfast time, and headbutts for strokes whenever he sees you.

Kotatsu · 30/10/2021 15:59

Oh, and I live in the sticks, so mine are allowed out during the day - but they don't go further than the end of the road (and girlcat not much out of the garden) - boy cat got treed by a couple of dogs at another house once, for a couple of days, and has been much more careful since. They both race home when they hear my car on the drive (a floofy ragdoll sprinting at full speed across the front garden to get through the cat flap and meet me inside the front door is a thing of beauty)

Tottie1994 · 30/10/2021 16:00

Mines kind of an asshole however she's beautiful, very soft and did I mention beautiful 😂

Duckrace · 30/10/2021 16:09

My experience of them also is that their fur is easier to look after than a Persians , as it doesn't knot.

So I have to say 1st of all thanks for all the wonderful responses to my post.

I decided not to go for the kitten, it was too instant, I was put on the spot etc.

However I did decided that a new feline addition will work for us and most definitely a ragdoll. I contacted breeders and should have the new family member late December Grin

They are divine :) My youngest boy (13 mnths) is a lilac point and is very attached to me, very loving, enormous and follows me everywhere. Here he is:

This is our rescue 4 year old ragdoll. Been with us 2 weeks today😍🤩😍

She is very eccentric and as laid back as they come. Gentle as a brush but definitely knows what she likes. Follows us around and likes to be near us but not too close. She’s normally or be found on a rug between the sofas or on the landing if we are upstairs.

She isn’t an outdoor cat yet but we do plan to let her out, she did have access to a garden before and the rescue advised she should have access to the outdoors.

I do worry someone will steal her, she is beautiful and I don’t doubt anyone could tempt her with a few dreamies🙈😱

We had a rag doll beautiful boy he was, had to keep his fur very short as found a couple of times he got his poop stuck in the fur so in that area fur was trimmed, used to lay across my arms when I held them out and he would flop , very mischievious very dog like, affectionate too much more adventurous than our two bsh cats we have, no fear whatsoever , used to lie across our German shepherds neck. Loved to sit on my lap, just as my two British shorthairs do, he passed quite young though at 7, was indoor cat a seal mitted raggy

CambsAlways · 10/11/2021 23:22

My cats are all indoor cats, we are lucky as own big house so have plenty of room to run about,
