What recipes or foods from your school days would you dream of eating again?

Most of my school dinners were grim or grey but there are some things I would desperately like to eat again mainly cake.

They include, but are not limited to;

'Shit cakes' as they were known Grin. They had cornflakes and golden syrup and looked like turds-hence the name they were known by. I have searched in vain for these to make them at home

School pizza- greasy, cheap cheese and tomato. Molten hot and square.

Sponge and custard-the custard was luminous, a bit lumpy and was served in generous portions with vanilla sponge covered in sprinkles. My teeth are rotting in sympathy.

I was about 6 stone and could have disappeared if I turned sideways yet ate this crap every day sadly not true these days.

I have just seen that each chocolate ball has about 200 calories in...might need to ration those out a bit!

Mrs Bradshaw’s baked roly poly pudding and custard. It was a thing of magnificence. My mother was an amazing cook but she couldn’t match Mrs Bradshaw when it came to roly poly pudding.
All my primary school dinners were lovely (late 70s). Our school had a proper kitchen and really good cooks.
Chocolate cake and mint custard was also a favourite.

Chocolate chip shortbread with a shit ton of sugar on top and gypsy tart.

The sausage rolls were amazing too - probably about 2% meat.

FindingMeno · 28/10/2021 22:22

There was a cake with a golden syrup bit on top.
No idea what it was but it filled a belly for the afternoon Smile

Chocolate toothpaste! Half the country has never heard of it...but if you know.....you know! Smile

Were the oaty biscuits 'melting moments'?

Jam and cornflake tart with pink custard

We used to have squidgy little chips in primary school that were served with a salad made of Chinese lettuce. I still dream about that meal sometimes. There must have been something else with it, but I just remember the chips and salad.

At secondary school, lots of us became vegetarian, and the dinner lady used to make us a quiche with lentils and green peppers. Sounds awful but it was lovely.

Ah butterscotch tart for me too. We had lots of nice puddings and many of them had a little circular dollop of cream on top, which I always enjoyed.
I'd love to know where PPs bakery is...!

@Msfoxy17 Butterscotch Tart

Pastry:
4oz/110g butter
8oz/225g plain flour
pinch salt
cold water to mix

Filling:
10oz/300g butter
10oz/300g Demerara sugar (I used soft brown)
6floz/175ml milk
3oz/75g plain flour

Method
Preheat the oven to 200deg C. Make the pastry in a 9” flan tin, prick the base and bake blind for 15 minutes, then remove the parchment and cook for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is just browning.

Melt the butter over a low heat, add the sugar, stirring until dissolved. Add the milk, slowly, and gradually whisk in the flour.

Whisk until smooth and the butterscotch coats the back of a spoon. Pour the mixture into the pastry case. Allow to set, then chill until firm.

Definitely not. They were more like flakemeal biscuits, but different. I wondered if it was one of the cook's personal recipes they used. They look a bit like these ones from google, they came from a Farming Life website that refers to a recipe but it's not actually on there when you click through.

Thank you @Reptar !

jackstini · 28/10/2021 23:00

@evilharpy - I know the biscuits you mean! Loved them but have no idea on recipe sorry Sad

All the tarts were good - Manchester, gypsy, butterscotch, cornflake...

From junior school I remember the sausages - not sure if they were deep fried, but oh the crunchiness on the outside, soft middles and flavour Grin

Savoury mince and chips followed by chocolate sponge and green custard (soil and grass - hahaha)

I might actually have to make myself this meal.

Artesia · 28/10/2021 23:07

The peppermint slice. A chocolate base, softer than a biscuit but not a cake, with a layer of minty loveliness, topped with chocolate. It was amazing!

Spam fritters with mashed potatoes and beans.
Pink sponge pudding with chocolate custard.
Chocolate cookies or concrete with pink custard.
Different varieties of pudding, eg roly poly, with normal yellow custard.
Even though the custard had lumps in, having it with all these different biscuits and cakes made it delicious.
I also remember the cornflake and golden syrup pudding, this was served with normal custard, they sell this in a local baker's shop.

I was just coming on here to mention the minty chocolate slice. OMG what I'd do for a piece of that now. Served from a trolley in the Sixth form common room every day. Never forgotten!!
Justawaterformeplease · 28/10/2021 23:26

Chicken supreme with rice! It was grey but so, so delicious.

SomeLikeItTepid · 28/10/2021 23:29

I have a slightly different recipe for your shitcakes (chocolate cracknell) given to me by a family friend who was a cook at my primary school. I'll try and find it out and post it 👍

PigeonPigPie · 28/10/2021 23:30

Chocolate toothpaste!!!

SprayedWithDettol · 28/10/2021 23:34

We had mashed potato nests with scrambled eggs in the middle. I didn’t eat the eggs, but loved the mashed potato.
