How to explain this to DS?

So we are currently on holiday in N Yorkshire. Having a lovely time. However, earlier today we were in a gift shop which had a large display of golliwogs. I was completely shocked, stunned and horrified and actually left the shop sharpish. But DS9 and DD11 saw them and DS wants to know what the "funny soft toys" were. I want to give him an answer but not sure what to say, I thought something along the lines of...they are soft toys that were popular a long time ago but that they are seen by people as offensive so we don't have them any more. They are an unpleasant representation of people with black skin? I wondered is wise mumsnetters could give some advice?

If you have to say anything, given kids are onto the next thing pretty quickly, I'd say they are toys from a bygone age, and not suitable anymore because people find them rightly offensive because they are racist.

Was that in Goathland?

Yes, @IHateWasps I couldn't believe it!

Neither could I when I was there about five years ago. It's depressing to hear that they're still on display.
