Halloween party for 5 year olds

Takemetothe90s · 28/10/2021 18:58

So I have agreed to let my 5yo dd have 8 friends round for a Halloween party.
Im the least maternal person every and this will be the first kids party I’ve ever hosted.
Any Halloween themed games, food or anything else I can do with them?
Parents are dropping and going except for one I'm going to stick in the kitchen with a brew !!
Thank you

I went to a kids Halloween party the other day... Making mummies with loo roll went down well. As did Halloween temporary tattoos and apple bobbing. There was also a craft table including making ghosts with white fabric, which all the kids loved. Spooky music and dancing is also a hit. Have fun!

Mini ring donuts hung on strings at eye height, first one to eat a whole one?
If you are feeling brutal dip them in syrup first.

I was going to suggest donuts on a string.

Best game ever 🤣🤣

I got ‘stick the spider on the web’ off Amazon cheaply. Also bought some premade gingerbread men and tubes of icing for them to decorate, you could also use rich tea for them to decorate as ‘pumpkins’
Might be able to find some Halloween bingo cards to print off the internet for free.

Jelly with sweet spiders, worms, sweetly eye balls went down well a few years ago at a works Halloween charity day.

Room on the Broom if it's on BBC iPlayer with some popcorn at the end of the party.

Glow stick trick or treat - sellotape haribo bags (or other sealed sweets) to glow sticks hide in the garden and send them into the garden with a torch Grin

Brilliant ideas, thank you.
Does anyone have any quirky food suggestions?

I’ve done Halloween food a couple of times. Google ‘mummy sausages’ or similar and use strips of puff pastry to wrap around sausages and bake. Then add mozzarella and olives for eyes. Peel clementines and stick a bit of celery in the top for pumpkins. Cut bananas in half and use chocolate chips or raisins to make eyes and a mouth. If you can find pretzel sticks, take a chunk of string cheese and peel it open a bit at the bottom. Then, stick the pretzel into the top. It makes it look like a broom. You can tie it with a strip of chive. Finally, I cut black olives into pieces and arranged them to look like spiders and put them on cheese pizzas.

As an activity, you could write or find a scary story and blindfold the children and then hand them things to feel like what you’re talking about. Like, here are the eyes of the monster, and they each hold two peeled grapes, or the monster’s guts and they get a handful of cold cooked spaghetti. That might be a little intense for 5yos, though. 😬

Saying that, in the past my children have always enjoyed a Halloween disco. Get Halloween balloons and a flashing disco light and let them dance to Halloween songs. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a bunch of 5yos doing the Time Warp.

Wonderful, thank you. Your food looks amazing!

You can play a version of pass the parcel with a witches hat - they pass the hat and wear it in turn until the music stops then whoever has the hat is the witch and gets a tiny prize (mini bag of haribo) then music starts again until by total coincidence its stopped once on each mini witch.

Tying bat biscuits to string across a doorway and trying to eat them without using your hands is also good.

Following for ideas as I’m doing a party this weekend for the same age group and I’ve not planned it yet!

Just in terms of structure, my go-to is having a simple craft-type activity they can do on arrival (keeps them entertained while you wait for everyone to arrive, stops them going immediately wild).

Follow with a few structured games (musical statues type thing), then food. If you’re hosting on their own plan a game they can do independently (treasure hunt etc) just before the food so you can do any prep/put out food.

Having a book you can read to them (on theme, interactive - eg things they can shout out) is good to have in reserve if you need to fill time or chill them out if they’ve got over-hyped. I like simple forfeits for ‘losing’ a game like statues instead of children sitting out (they get sad and bored). Things like ‘stand on one leg’, ‘hop like a frog’ etc

A Dark Dark Tale by Ruth Brown is a fantastic spooky book for children, I'm not sure it's in print anymore but is probably available on eBay.

Definitely Halloween disco.

You can try to decorate Halloween cupcakes with them.

Decorating little pumpkins?

RosieRoww · 29/10/2021 10:38

Couldn't you hire a bouncy castle?
We had it on our last party and it was a huge hit.

No time or space for a bouncy castle and a very wet weekend forecast.

I’m doing the spider Oreos and the pumpkin satsumas but those cupcakes are far beyond my capabilities!!!
