Laptop or iPad?

I’m not sure which is better for me.

I need:- word, Firefox, normal googling, lots of tabs open, camera and microphone, possibly a proper keyboard (I’m not sure), some way of using earphones, it would be good to have it lightish and portable I think, and that’s it. Oh, I’d really prefer a mouse, I don’t like using your finger to scroll etc.

I have an iPhone so that’s making me think an iPad is sensible?

What CAN’T I do on an iPad?

And any specific recommendations?

And I’m crap with computers.

What is your budget?

MissCruellaDeVil · 28/10/2021 18:53

If you want a mouse. an iPad is not for you. I have a Macbook air that can do all of those things though. It's easy to use and syncs with your iPhone, so all your messages, notes etc are on there too. What's your budget?

OnlyClothes · 28/10/2021 18:59

Thanks both! No specific budget other than under £1000 hopefully.

I’m gutted that you said that about no mouse, @MissCruellaDeVil, is there no way around that? I was kind of leaning towards an iPad to be honest.

I want a good quality product that’ll last, I will pay what I have to. If the perfect thing for me is say £1250 then I’ll pay it though.

I use my iPad 90% of the time, but when I need my laptop (spreadsheets, anything involving typing more than a few sentences, keeping track of emails rather than the odd on the fly response) I couldn’t do without the laptop.

If it’s either/or I vote get a laptop.

You can combine an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad, so they are, in effect, laptops.

OnlyClothes · 28/10/2021 19:18

@bongsuhan what is a trackpad? The finger scrolling thing?

OP posts:
OnlyClothes · 28/10/2021 19:23

@Asdf12345 I will be doing a lot of typing but it’s not all the time, only now and then. I have access to proper computers to use for that anytime I want. Plus I do most of my written work on paper first then type it up all in one go when it’s finished because I’m very very old so not being able to type reams and reams on an iPad isn’t a minus point for me at the moment.

Yes, a trackpad is where you use your fingers to scroll / control the cursor instead of a mouse.

Sorry for the delay OP, children bed time got in the way!
You can use a bluetooth keyboard with the iPad, this will let you type, some have track pads that work like a mouse (just like a laptop) and it would work out cheaper than a MacBook air.
The iPad is also more versatile as you can take off the keyboard etc and use it as an e-reader, watch movies etc.

I use iPads at work for Internet searches and apps, but I'm studying as well as working and use a laptop for assignments, it's quick to open and I prefer to use a full attached keyboard and touch pad mouse. I find some sites easier to navigate on my laptop.

Ive an iPhone and the kids have iPads which I steal occasionally… but the best is a MacBook Air … I had one for years and plan on getting another. Miss it now I don’t have it.

I-ad for me I saved for the 12 inch one I love it, it’s old now hoping to get a few more years out of it.
