Fucking fungal infections!!

Aibu to ask how to actually get rid for once and for all?! I've had athletes foot which has left me with an itchy sole for 6 months now. But worse, my poor 4yo Ds had balanitis (a bit like foreskin thrush) for 4 months now, it's the second time this year, it looks like it's clear but the irritation persists and makes him think he needs to urinate every hour day and night. From 2am last night he was up every 1hr or even 30 mins. He doesn't actually go, because his bladder is empty. We've tried 3 different creams. The only thing that helps is using hydrocortisone cream for 2 weeks, but a few days after stopping that the irritation is back. The doctors haven't actually seen him, offered an appointment in 4wks time. So an turning to mumsnet. How do you actually make these really persistent fucking fungal infections go?!

Crispynoodle beat me to it. Type 1 diabetes often appears at this age.

Namenic · 29/10/2021 01:22

We were referred to paediatrics for recurrent suspected balanitis - treated with multiple courses of anti fungals. Paediatrician diagnosed eczema - cleared up by a course of steroid cream and gentle baths.

WookyBooky · 29/10/2021 05:51

Also suggesting diabetes or something related. If it's not going away with treatment then it could be systemic.

He's been checked for diabetes and all clear.

Are you sure it’s fungal? When DS had it once the dr prescribed an ointment that is actually normally used for conjunctivitis, and it which is not a fungal infection AFAIK. It worked very quickly too.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/10/2021 07:28

Definitely need to be seen by GP. It may not be fungal. It may be bacterial & require antibiotics.

That's a terrible response from your GP.

Bobbybobbins · 29/10/2021 07:37

This is awful from your GP.

My DS had a fungal skin infection flare up on his face (we think he has sebborhaic dermatitis) and the GP never saw him - just kept prescribing different creams til it went away. Ironically it was a Mumsnet thread on SD that helped me identify a cream and shampoo that helped.

I can't offer any advice, by my DD 2.5 currently has her 19th episode of oral thrush this year.

The slightest sign of being over tired or ran down, and back it comes. She's miserable, not eating and disturbed sleep.

We have been referred for tests to see if there are any underlying auto immune conditions, just waiting for the appointment.

Indecisivelurcher · 29/10/2021 20:31

That's terrible @Seriously79! Have they tried oral anti fungals at all?

@Indecisivelurcher yes, we've had several creams, gels and lotions, but it's so hard to rub it into her tongue when it's so sore.

Luckily we've had her appointment come through today for December, so not too long to wait.

But never a tablet then @Seriously79? My friend mentioned a tablet to me today, for thrush.
Fingers crossed you get a solution! Poor little one.

No, never had a tablet. But to be honest I don't think she would take a tablet very well.

Ds had fungal things when small. Kept coming back. BOIL, I mean literally BOIL his pants. Every time till it has been gone for weeks. Otherwise it will just keep on coming back…
