If you are a petite size 6 where do you buy clothes?

Recently lost weight and toned up having been a size10-12 my whole life (I’m mid 40s). I’m now consistently a size 6 on top and a 6-8 below depending on the brand. I’ve had a few of my favourite clothes altered, but am trying to add to my limited wardrobe. I’m just about to send back a 3rd online shopping attempt because literally nothing fits. My wardrobe before mostly consisted of white stuff, fat face, crew clothing, gap jeans, but it’s mostly 10+ years old, so probably time for a style change anyway. Thank you.

Well done on the health improvement OP Smile

Are you able to visit a shop in person to eyeball the sizes? Or order a range of sizes (4,6,8) and send the wrong ones back?

voxnihili · 28/10/2021 07:10

I found nice stuff in oasis but haven’t looked since it went online only. I always found things from fat face etc came up far too large. Like a pp I find Next quite good, especially online as there’s a range of brands are ordering and returning are easy. I also find things that fit me in new look but I feel too old to shop in there now (late 30s). Joules seems to fit quite well although I’ve only tried tops from there.

I have to be careful about style though as anything that is designed to be oversized or very baggy does not suit me, but it don’t like skin tight either so it is a challenge.

@Frankii thank you.

Yes, I’m thinking I might have to go to a large dept store and get one of the free personal shopper sessions. There isn’t one in my town, so it will have to be a day trip. Ive ordered a range of sizes from
M&S and JL and sent them all back and yesterday got a delivery from crew clothing. I’d got a few size 6 items from eBay some of which fit and some are too small or too big! In Last nights order all the size 6 swamped me, but one size 8 top seemed to fit. So even sizing in one company doesn’t seem uniform, and lots of companies don’t even do size 4! It’s really frustrating (in a first world problems kid of way).

I am the same size. I find Next clothing too big. I’ve had better luck in H&M.

Chillyjellytotty · 28/10/2021 09:04

As someone who is the same size next size 6 is much larger than other shops. I much prefer topshop, Abercrombie, ASOS is good as you can order lots of stuff and send back, you need to buy from shops that are seen as younger as sizes tend to be smaller than shops like next, M&S, fat face. What sort of tops are you looking for?

SisforSoppy · 28/10/2021 13:07

@Chillyjellytotty long sleeved cotton fitted (but not tight) tops. Blouses and long sleeved t-shirts. Almost everything I’ve tried on looks like a plastic shopping bag with arm holes cut into it. Utterly shapeless and unflattering.

Next, New Look, ASOS Petite. Sometime you get lucky with M&S extra short but they’re unusual.

Anywhere else I typically have to alter length - but I’m a wiz with wonder web 🤣

Primark also do an ankle grazer skinny that passes as standard length.

countingto10 · 28/10/2021 20:25

Karen Millen now does a petite range, along with Reiss, Boden, Hobbs etc

Campfirewood · 28/10/2021 20:31

I was in Hobbs last week and everything was too big, it was frustrating (size 6 petite here too). Same with Boden, so unsure if I’ve been unlucky but I’ve had to stop using them.
Also seen M and S recommended on this thread, their XS is too big as well. So I have to go in and try stuff on. Sometimes I’ll get lucky.
I genuinely struggle to find clothes to fit as well Op.
I use next, Karen Millen, Ted baker (size 0), H and M, Oliver Bonas and the kids section (numerous places 😂)

minipie · 28/10/2021 20:54

I would say:

Yes to H&M and Abercrombie/Hollister
J Crew
Petit Bateau
Jack Wills (do they still exist)
Dorothy Perkins (believe it or not)
Reiss sometimes
Karen Millen if you like the style (bit blingy for me)
Whistles sometimes

M&S, Boden, Crew, Gap, White Stuff mostly do not do slim or small fitting stuff IME. Fat face you could try the Ivy t shirt but not the other styles.

I warn you though: baggy/square/oversized is the style at the moment, it’s very hard to find slim fitting tops at all.

Next is huge. I'm a size 10 usually but easily fit in an 8 in next.
My daughter ends up in primark or h&m as they tend to come up small

So glad I came on this thread, I’d forgotten about hollister!

3WildOnes · 28/10/2021 21:09

H&M, some things in Zara, Whistles, Reiss, Brora
Lululemon and sweaty Betty for lounge or work our clothes.

Noseylittlemoo · 28/10/2021 21:16

I'm also a petite size 6 too.
My go to used to be Miss Selfridge petite section in Debenhams (despite being probably 20 years older than their target market)so I'm a bit lost now!! But I recently found some great jeans in New Look. They are the short length but I've also had things from their petite section and teenage section.
In the past I've also had jeans from Next petite but I think their sizes have got a lot bigger since I bought them about 10 years ago.
@Hodgehog the White Company size 4 is available only online (unless you find a returned item in a size 4)
