No bottom teeth . What can I eat

Ok so I have had all my bottom Teeth removed a couple weeks ago. I have temporary dentures but I think we are talking at least March till I can get rid of them.

I went to the dentist yesterday for a check and he adjusted them put something on them to soften them. They were fine for the rest of the day. I took them out in the night. now when I try to put them in the pain is awful . I can even put then in at all. It's hard to explain but I have like lumpy pointy but not not sharp bone in my gum that (almost) points through. And when the denture touching it the pain is awful .

So now I just give up Sad

I'm now trying to think of foods I could eat without bottom teeth. I absolutely hate soup so that's a definite no . So far I have.

Porridge, smooth yogurts, rice pudding. Mash potato. Salmon. Cod. Poached egg.

Any other idea ? I guess I will take multi vitamin to try and make up for what I'm missing.

Mashed banana
Mashed root vegetables
Apple purée
Scrambled egg
Weetabix with warm milk
Smoothies

If it is the spicule thing my dentist said it is similar to a splinter in your finger. It will basically rise up to the top and come out of your gum - the dentist dug mine out before it had a chance. It felt absolutely huge in my mouth but she showed it to me and it was like the width of a needle - I think in your mouth things feel much larger.

Please go back, OP. Around the same time as that extraction I had a root canal done by a super expensive private specialist. He said the cost was for the treatment and if I had to go in 100 times before he signed me off, that was on him.

Years ago my df had all his teeth removed and had dentures after the last 12. The top set were ok but he never ate with the bottom set, but after the first couple of weeks ate everything as before.
I'd go back and insist on a check.

@SheWoreYellow

It’s a bit as if you had a splinter in your body. You do just gradually reject it, it will poke out of your gum one day.
Oh. Maybe it's much smaller than it seems then. And maybe it won't take to long to come out

When I was pregnant and could barely eat without being sick I found chocolate buttons were good as they literally just melt. Obviously you can't just eat them but it might make food a bit more fun while you are eating a limited diet x

Is the lumpy bit at the edge of the gum, I had this but only on the gum edge, sort of hard and felt like it was coming through the gum, it did resolve itself after about a month or so, iirc. The gum sort of padded out over it. I would go to the dentist though because as PP said sometimes they need removing to heal properly if it's an odd piece of bone rather than the boney edge

bizarrustii · 27/10/2021 21:00

Is it just one spot OP? Your dentist should be able to ease the denture in that area if so. It's quite usual for there to be several ease appointments after an immediate denture replacing multiple teeth is fitted.
If it is lumpy all the way across the lower ridge (denture bearing ridge), it may be a case of waiting for the bone to resorb over the next few months. There are soft linings etc that the lab can construct onto your immediate denture but usually best to wait until the permanent dentures are made for that.
Definitely go back and see if the denture can be eased.

Congee is actually great food for someone who can't chew well. Rice is cooked really soft, and you can add anything you like, chopped up small so you can eat it like soup but really filling and tasty with added spices etc.

Angel delight, Weetabix with milk,. Your gums are probably still very tender and not completely healed if it was only a couple of weeks ago, as they heal they get a lot tougher so if you have to take your denture out you can still gum food like bread if it's fairly soft though you may not be at that stage yet.

When I first had the teeth out I has the temporary denture right away . It was horrible but I would wear it as much as I could bare to get myself used to it . Especially when I was out. I was using adhesive but it felt like a slug in my mouth.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and Yesterday I had a check up. I told him how the dentures were jumping about how horrible the adhesive felt. Which is not really working. I did tell him it hurt where the boney bit is but only for a few seconds once the denture was in place its ok.

He shaved some bits of the denture and he added what he called a cushion I think ? It's the same colour as the denture. It still felt odd but was much more comfy . He told me to keep them in till bed time and that it would all shape to my gum shape. I took them out around 11pm last night.

This morning I went to put them in I just could not put them in the pain on the boney bit was just awful and the pain did not go away like it has before.

He said I have more than one of them. But the others I don't feel or notice really

It sounds like the spicule has moved a bit as the gum is expelling it, so that would explain why it feels different this morning to how it did last night. I found that when it reached the stage you could see it through the skin, or see a bump, it moves pretty quickly.

For context, I have had most of my upper teeth removed this year. I had A LOT of these little bastards. A LOT. And they can take days to get out once you start feeling them. Most are small but I had one so large that it was poking out each side of my gum and was bloody painful. It was very firmly stuck and I tried to painfully push it through one side and it wouldn’t move. Took about a week to come up through the top of my gum and absolutely obliterated my gum in the process. I was in bits. As was my gum. The relief when it came out! It was a centimetre long and half as wide and looked like the bed of the root part of my jaw. I was quite stunned. And then it healed super super quick and I forgot all about it until now.

Bodies are weird, but you’ll be ok xxx

Duckrace · 27/10/2021 22:27

I think the money you have paid already should ensure a comfortable denture, temporary or not.

If you can bear it, keep rubbing your tongue over the bony bit. I basically worried mine with my tongue until I could see its “head” with my phone torch and then the dentist was able to grab it with her tool. Per pp as soon as it was gone it healed immediately. I actually had a follow up appointment booked as standard because it was a pretty big molar and difficult to come out (she had to section it) so it worked out well time-wise, but I would 100% have called in and asked to be seen if I didn’t.

I had a spell in 2017 where I had loads of dental issues (which it turned out were due to neuralgia, and not my actual teeth, but that’s another story) and I always felt funny about calling/being a pest. My dentist told me I absolutely must NOT feel like this, that she would far rather I came in than was in pain, even if it meant squeezing me in at lunch/after 5. I know I am very lucky to have such a good dentist - and after that period where I was seeing her practically weekly she was like my best pal - but I am sure every dentist would feel the same.

Thank you. When you say about kind if rubbing it ect abd till you saw it poling through a bit so you mean from the top of the gum ? As mine looks like it wants to come out the side if the gum.

Mine was through the top, but the side is completely normal - it wants to come out wherever it wants to come out!

You can sort of suck chips and roast potatoes.

Whenthedealgoesdown · 28/10/2021 08:12

Yes potato products, also cake are relatively easy to eat without teeth as saliva breaks them down well, just be careful with skins and avoid cakes with anything in them like dried fruit or nuts. It's the unhealthy stuff that is easier to eat, unfortunately or maybe fortunately depends how you look at it.

Whenthedealgoesdown · 28/10/2021 08:14

Stewed cooking apples go down quite mushy if you want something a bit healthier

Laufeythejust · 28/10/2021 08:34

I hope it fixes itself soon! When I had teeth taken out or braces and my mouth was sore my go to was those premade carrot mash packs from Tesco with lots of bisto followed by a chocolate mouse.

TrueRefuge · 28/10/2021 09:04

I do really think you need to get back and see the dentist. I don't know your financial situation, but you shouldn't be in pain and you might end up malnourished if you can't eat "properly"...! This can't go on until March. Please call them and explain the situation; since you've gone private, arguably you have more right to demand proper treatment.

I would look up some dhal recipes with red or yellow lentils. They break down nice and soft and are so tasty! You can do classic Indian yellow dhal, or there are some nice varieties out there with cooked down spinach, or coconut milk, for example. Cheap, nutritious and tasty.

Also avocado, try and eat a few of those: nice and soft and lots of healthy fats.

But please call your dentist.

lovingnewme · 28/10/2021 19:19

Chilli con carne with rice
Biscuits dunked in tea
Milkshakes/smoothies

I would be concerned about your jaw?
I've had teeth removed and it lead to jaw ache as I was holding my mouth open too much. If you have no bottom teeth or denture then your jaw might close too much causing more discomfort?

Please ring your dentist for advice.
