Hi I have some seabass that says use by the 27th /today I bought it chilled and it's been in the fridge. Would it still be OK to eat?

Of course it's OK. It's not out of date until tomorrow

PressingTeams · 27/10/2021 17:12

You’re asking if some in date food is ok to eat?

dementedpixie · 27/10/2021 17:12

Because its use by the end of today so isn't out of date until tomorrow

SirensofTitan · 27/10/2021 17:13

Because today is the 27th, it would only be a question needing to be asked if the use by date was in the past Confused

vajingleberry · 27/10/2021 17:14

It says use by today's date.

What is so hard to understand about that?

GoodnightGrandma · 27/10/2021 17:14

It says use by today, so I can see the confusion. It doesn’t say use by 12mn on the 27th.

greenlynx · 27/10/2021 17:14

Yes, if “use by 27th” you can still use it today. If “best before 27th” e.g on eggs the last day to use it is 26th.

Best before 27th also means the 27th not the 26th. In fact best before means you can still use it after that date but quality may be impaired Use by means you should not use it after that date

You can still eat tomorrow or the next day as long as it isn't smelly or clearly off

No wonder there is such a food waste problem in this country

Do people really think that food has an internal clock and self destruct mechanism at the stroke of midnight Grin

BabyRace · 27/10/2021 17:30

Smell it. If it smells gross don't eat it. Pretty easy to tell when fish and chicken are gone, your evolutionary genes are still in there somewhere.

Generalpost · 27/10/2021 17:48

I'm asking because say with chicken if that says use by 27th and open to use on the 27th it smells gross.

Anyway i just opened the fish and it smells simlar to when chichen gos off so I have binned it Sad

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 27/10/2021 17:50

There is often a smell immediately on opening that dissipates in a few minutes. Is your fridge cold enough as meat should still be OK on its use by date?

Amberflames · 27/10/2021 17:51

Wtf? If chicken smells off on the use by date you should be returning it to the store for a refund. Likewise fish. That is not normal.

DroopyClematis · 27/10/2021 20:53

So you've binned it.
End of.

This.

icedcoffees · 27/10/2021 21:24

If you're regularly throwing away food that smells bad, you need to check your fridge is working properly.

icedcoffees · 27/10/2021 21:26

That's totally incorrect Confused

Best before is just a very broad advisory term - you can eat things for months after their Best Before date as long as they've not gone off.

They might not taste as nice or as fresh, but using an egg that's three days out of date won't hurt you! They last for weeks and weeks if stored correctly.
