School Snacks

What are the thoughts on oat cakes for a school snack? Nairns. Is it healthy on the days a Y6 has a lunch time and after school sport clubs, plus an evening martial arts class? I thought they were better than grapes, blueberries etc as they would provide more energy, but apparently they arnt. There is fruit and veg in the packed lunch, and at dinners.

Yes I think oatcakes are a great healthy snack. Maybe with a bit of hummus for some extra protein and iron.

Y6 with Frubes apparently were fine.

They're fine. Have school sent a letter home or something?

Just DD was told off for taking a healthy snack token today because they weren't healthy, and she got upset because she struggled to challenge it and the teacher told her she was incorrect.

Do you mean plain Scottish oatcakes? Or the fruit and seed type?
Plain ones have essentially no sugar. They are quite high in fat, but low in saturated, and certainly lower than crisps or other types of crackers. Oats are a low GI food, so it's slow release energy too.
Perhaps the staff thought the oatcakes were biscuits? (Look a little like digestives or hobnobs, maybe?)

And small children need fats/oils in their diet, btw.

Just planed old fine milled oatcakes. DD explained what they were.
