Can’t hear - ear wax build up, any removal methods?!

Please help, I’ve been unable to hear out of one ear since this time last week, reduced hearing for probably a week before that. Things I have tried:

  • earrex ear drops, thought they were a miracle cute could hear after first application but rapidly blocked up again
  • olive oil
  • sodium bicarbonate - though only started this today
  • ear candles
  • flush out with water (with squeezy tool)
  • a general rummage (I know I shouldn’t have but it doesn’t appear to be getting better)
  • doctor. Absolutely no help. Advice was to continue to wait
  • pharmacy. Told me to go back to doctor.

Any ideas / tips / tricks greatfully received!

How long have you been using the olive oil drops for?

AutumnBlu · 27/10/2021 16:18

Had the same issue as you but used the olive oil drops for around 5 days and my ears cleared up considerably

romdowa · 27/10/2021 16:19

There are places where you can pay to have your ear hoovered and it's the best way to clear wax that is stuck.

Around here Specsavers do wax removal by vacuum suction. Dh has had it done twice.
You need to put olive oil drops in for 5 days first, to soften it.

SilverTonguedDevil · 27/10/2021 16:23

Specsavers will use suction to remove wax. £55.

alwaysonadiet1 · 27/10/2021 16:26

Spec savers do micro suction earwax removal, you need to soften it with olive oil drops or spray for a while first..

Jamnotjelly · 27/10/2021 16:28

Do you have a good sized bathtub? If you have already been using the olive oil for a few days to soften the wax, you could try a warm bath, lying down all the way so your ears are under the water. That shifted my earwax recently. I hope you get some relief soon!

Purplewithred · 27/10/2021 16:29

Microsuction. Seriously, it is absolutely wonderful and the only solution if you've tried drops/giving it time etc.

If you want to know why it's wonderful and why not to rummage or use qtips watch one of these

Pizzapizzaz · 27/10/2021 16:31

Thank you all! Specsavers, who knew?!

Will go back to olive oil then, I started with that for approx 3 days and (wrongly) assumed the earrex would be better! Just checked and I have a specsavers close by 🙏 will report back.

@Pizzapizzaz
I would phone the Specsavers, rather than visit if you want an appointment quite soon. I had to ring around a lot of stores to get a suitable date.

GreenLunchBox · 28/10/2021 00:06

Not just Specsavers. Google private ear wax removal near you.

BessieFinknottle · 28/10/2021 00:21

Specially designed syringe-type tool, where you gently flush out ears with lots of water, worked here.

LegArmpits · 28/10/2021 00:25

Hi Op
I had this two weeks ago. I never suffer with my ears so when I suddenly couldn't hear in one it was a problem. I tried everything except the doctors as I couldn't get an appointment. Then suddenly the bad ear popped, and everything went back to normal.
It took seven days. I did use ear drops with hydrogen peroxide in but not often. I think it was a red herring.

BessieFinknottle · 28/10/2021 00:32

I used to get the microsuction done and, last time, the consultant told me that applying too many drops beforehand is bad too. He wants the wax softened a bit, but apparently if the wax is too liquid it makes his job harder. So, it's a bit difficult really to judge how many days to apply the drops for - I had done 3 days as recommended but it was too many in this particular instance.

BessieFinknottle · 28/10/2021 00:35

Also, war candles have the reputation of being potentially quite dangerous. I don't know of any medical professional who recommends them, so maybe that's one method to avoid in future.

BessieFinknottle · 28/10/2021 00:37

War?!?
I meant ear candles, of course.
Though war candles sound quite dangerous too Grin

SkiingIsHeaven · 28/10/2021 00:42

Pardon?

Sorry but someone had to say it. It is the law in our house.

H1978 · 28/10/2021 08:11

I had this a couple of months ago. I used otex from the pharmacy. Cleared up in a couple of days. It’s awful not being able to hear. Hope it sorts itself out soon.

Pizzapizzaz · 28/10/2021 10:19

Thanks @SilverTonguedDevil I did call and they said they were unusually busy at the moment so a month wait, also same at another hearing centre. I have booked in with a nurse on tues though that’s going to come to my house, I’d really like to get it sorted before then though!

Thanks for all other advice too, I wasn’t sure on the ear candles but definitely at the point where I’ll try anything! They didn’t appear to do much though but who knows if I was doing it correctly.
