Does your 9 year old dd still play with toys?

DD turned 9 in September and is in year 4. She plays with her dolls house, Lottie dolls, Sylvanians and loves arts & crafts activities such as making jewellery, bath bombs or pretend perfume. Her best friend doesn't play with anything and is mainly into dance (takes lessons) and watching YouTube clips. This friend also makes dance videos, which she posts on Tiktok. This has become an issues now as they don't have much in common anymore. The other girls in dd's year don't play so much either, they are into gaming, dance, makeup and watching YouTube.

Is my dd unusual or do other 9 year old still play with toys?

Your dd is completely normal and it’s lovely that she enjoys playing with her toys OP, you have absolutely nothing to be worried about. My dd has just turned 9. Yes, she loves to play with Barbies, Lego, her noisy pretend dog (my fault for allowing that one past the Smyths checkout!) dolls and crafts.
She has an iPad which she likes to play on (Roblox mainly) but I limit screentime.
I think she relaxes more when she plays with toys rather than being on her iPad and I believe she still learns through play, it also encourages creativity.
She was on a sleepover last weekend and out of 6 girls her age, she was the only one not to have a phone. I found that really sad, they’re still so young. One of them especially was on TikTok posting videos all of the time and not engaging with the others. On all of the photos, she had her phone in her hand.
Each to their own and totally no judgement here but I’m really pleased that my dd still enjoys playing with her toys.

My DD is 9 and a half, she enjoys craft and drawing, and loves quite complex Lego and also Gravitrax. She will happily play with toys with her sister (nearly 7), so Sylvanians, Barbies, LOLs, Our Generation etc. Her favourite thing is her Switch, but we do keep a lid on it. She doesn't have a phone and won't till she goes to High School, but we are rural so she's never really out without us. She doesn't really watch YouTube very often and isn't allowed any social media. Only one of her friends has a phone as far as I know.

I will say she is struggling for ideas for Christmas, beyond an art set and gymnastics beam, so I do think her toy years are coming to a close. She'll still play with her sister's stuff for a while yet though I imagine.

My 9 year old is slowly losing interest in toys, and is reading a lot instead. She still plays sporadically with her Sylvanian Families, lots of Lego with her (older) brother. Craft and building from the recycling bin with her glue gun. Playing out, climbing trees, but more and more skateboarding/ scooter/practicing here favourite sport.
She has Switch and iPad but we limit this. She doesn't have a phone and doesn't watch YouTube or TikTok. One of her friends has a phone since her parents split.

She has a couple of dolls although has never really played with them. A friend came over recently and asked how come DD was still allowed to keep her dolls. Her mum had thrown all of hers away because she'd decided friend was too old to be playing with them. She spent the whole time playing with them. I found that quite sad.

Yes. DS has a younger brother who forces him to play even when he just wants to slump infront of the TV 🤣

Thirtyrock39 · 28/10/2021 07:04

No very rarely and I miss it a lot, it's all Roblox sometimes a bit of drawing but it's all very screen based now

Rockbird · 28/10/2021 07:06

DD2 absolutely loves her dolls (or her sisters Hmm) and is asking for more clothes, accessories etc for Christmas. She does Irish dance and Stagecoach and loves both. But at the same time she loves playing Roblox with her friends and watching Barbie videos on YouTube. Definitely not into make up or anything yet and not allowed TikTok. They're so different at this age.

My dd had stopped playing with toys by the time she had finished reception. She was into crafts, books, games etc. Very few screens around then.

DS still plays with Sylvanian type toys a lot. He’s also into crafts, video games, Lego and watching YouTubers. I’ve noticed he still plays imaginative games with his friends in the playground as well.

My daughter will be 10 soon and is still very much into toys, barbies, lego, books, arts&craft etc But its what I call the in-between age as she also likes makeup, music, tablet, clothes and has been asking about a mobile phone for the last year or 2.....I've put off buying too many gadgets as I think that will replace the imaginative play but I know its coming 😔

dollywoodlooksgood · 28/10/2021 07:33

My DD is 9 in January and top of her Christmas list is a Rainbow High dolls house. I’m sure she will play with it as she loves playing with dolls still.

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 28/10/2021 11:08

Paperyfish · 28/10/2021 11:17

My 9yo still plays with dolls and toys and all sorts. She also likes switch and PlayStation though! This weekend she is most excited about carving a pumpkin.
