Halloween/spooky films - no sex scenes

50 replies

StillSadAboutTiffanyMitchell · 27/10/2021 12:42

Does anyone know of any scary films with no sex scenes in?
My son is 11 and has asked to watch a scary film with me on Friday night but from memory, the ones I think of all have sex scenes in.
I don't mind gore, violence, swearing but I don't really want to sit there watching sex with him.
Hes mature and I'm thinking up to a 15 rating.

Any ideas as I'm stumped.
Thanks

@SoniaFouler

Drag me to Hell. IIRC it doesn’t have any sex scenes, is a 15, and has some real laugh out loud moments
Yes, very underrated. I agree with The Others too.

@Justcashnosweets

Sleepy Hollow. I watched it last night. I'd forgotten how good it is!
Bloody good film
TheBlackHeart · 27/10/2021 13:51

There's also Sweeney Todd on Netflix.

TheBlackHeart · 27/10/2021 13:52

@TheBlackHeart

There's also Sweeney Todd on Netflix.
Oh, sorry. Think that's an 18 actually.

@StillSadAboutTiffanyMitchell

Oooh great suggestions thank you all. I fancied the others but can't find it anywhere. We have prime, netflix and now tv movies
I'm pretty sure The Woman in Black is on Netflix
StillSadAboutTiffanyMitchell · 27/10/2021 16:21

@PopsicleHustler

Sorry, but you dont mind an 11 year old seeing violent and hearing bad language and swearing???
Oh here she comes 🙄 no I don't. If you have an 11 year old and think they haven't heard swearing before or seen violence on TV then you're off your head.

I don't verbally abuse or expose my children to violence in real life and my son is old enough and mature enough to be able to differentiate real life and TV and has expressed a wish to watch a scary film with me.

Thank you to everyone except @PopsicleHustler for the great suggestions.
I'm going to look them all up and then decide what to watch.
My son is very excited and has been to the shop to buy the snacks for us already.
On Saturday night we're going to watch kids halloween films with his younger brother and he feels very grown up being able to stay up on the Friday with me.

Not Halloween but if you want scary.

Alien
Jaws
The Thing.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 27/10/2021 16:30

Shaun of the Dead - i'd have thought an 11 yr old would love that.

Bit sweary, but nothing he'd not hear in the playground i'd wager

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 27/10/2021 16:31

I’m genuinely surprised that so many of you all think that these films are appropriate for an 11 year old. I don’t care about swearing but a lot of these films are really scary. I watched IT when I was about 12 and I’ve never got over it. I didn’t say anything at the time because I wanted to seem grown up.
Do you not worry about your kids getting nightmares? Why the rush to let them watch this stuff?

TheBlackHeart · 27/10/2021 16:32

but a lot of these films are really scary

Maybe to you.

erinaceus · 27/10/2021 16:37

There's Grabbers which is less scary and more ridiculous. I agree Shaun of the Dead is worth considering.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 27/10/2021 16:39

They are horror films, surely that’s the point. If you don’t find them scary fine but how do you know how an 11 year old might react.

PlausibleSuit · 27/10/2021 16:46

Oooh I just thought

Tremors

It has the odd mild sexual reference IIRC but nothing major. It's quite funny too.

Also Gremlins maybe?

I don’t know about anybody else but I gave a film which fit what the OP asked: a horror film, no higher age rating than a 15 and with no sex scenes in it. OP didn’t ask for a judgement of whether I thought an 11 year should watch it or not.
WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 27/10/2021 17:14

You can’t dictate how people respond to posts. It’s not just an echo chamber where only views that match your own are allowed to be expressed.

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 27/10/2021 17:15

Shaun of the Dead was an excellent suggestion - it was very funny.

Your son is probably too young for Paranormal activity - that scared the daylights out of me.

Mybalconyiscracking · 27/10/2021 17:18

I wouldn’t let my 11yo near half of this films, I think you’re insane OK.

Thank god my DD is locked out of my Netflix because she's dying to watch the Halloween films and she's 8 . I can't wait until she's around 11/12 when she can have horror nights with me and her dad.
The conjuring is one of the best horrors we've seen.

PhantomErik · 27/10/2021 17:25

We watched Hocus Pocus recently & there were lots of references to boobs & virgins which was a bit uncomfortable (DC are 12, 11 & 9 here).

Also watched Ghostbusters & there was a scene of a 'ghost' undoing Dan Ackroyd's trousers etc which lasted a bit longer than necessary which was also a bit awkward to explain.

My DC are pretty sheltered when it comes to films, TV programmes etc so most people might not be bothered

They & we are fine with stuff like Jurassic World, Harry Potter etc

Addams family is good.

Justme10 · 27/10/2021 17:27

Definitely the conjuring movies and another for the skeleton key

Tenfifteen · 27/10/2021 17:38

Gremlins? Showing my age!

I do love Drag Me To Hell! I think that’s every bit as knowing with it’s references as Scream but in a different way. I’m not sure about 11 though.

FlorenceWintle · 27/10/2021 18:18

The Woman In Black is a proper haunted house, doorknob-rattling, candle-flickering traditional horror film. Should be perfect for what you want.

When I was young and watched Hocus Pocus I thought they meant and kept saying that a VIRGO lit the black candle because I didn’t know what a virgin was 😂
