Residential volunteering ideas for a 19 y/o?

Sadik · 27/10/2021 11:13

DD has asked if I'd seek the wisdom of MN for any ideas she's missed.
She's looking for a residential volunteering placement medium/long term (I guess ideally 3 months plus, 6 months would be ideal).

She found Volunteering Matters and was very excited by the description of the opportunities potentially on offer, but isn't getting anywhere with her application (no response to email / phone messages).

Ideally somewhere urban, and starting sooner rather than later (YHA volunteer warden would be great, but they're not recruiting now), she's pretty competent, volunteers at local library, has done IT help sessions for older people etc. She can also drive a tractor / use a chainsaw etc but really wants to do something for a change from rural / agricultural work (so probably not WWOOFing)

Any thoughts gratefully received! She wants to be in the UK, and working ideally in a group setting (so not au pair-ing for example).

I was going to suggest Calvert trust as well

Here is a link for how to volunteer at Scout Adventures - which run the outdoor centres for The Scouts in the UK

Missed round one for the Scout centres (national ones), though worth enquiring about round 2: www.scoutadventures.org.uk/inspire-a-generation

Ha, cross post whilst I was looking that up!

[quote coffeemonster28]I volunteered with Vitalise years ago and loved it - it is supporting respite breaks for people with disabilities, looks like they offer long-term volunteering opportunities

Me too! Only they were winged fellowship back in the day. I only did a couple of weeks with them but they defo had long-term volunteers. A fabulous organisation.

Definitely not urban but Iona community does 3 month placements and is a lovely community of volunteers might be one to look at?

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/10/2021 20:16

UK or overseas?

EduCated · 27/10/2021 20:18

I’m now fascinated by helpstay.com Blush some of the posts look dodgy as anything, but other like this look like they could be more sensible! helpstay.com/stays/Hostel-Team-Scotland#overview

Sadik · 27/10/2021 20:20

UK only MrsSkyler - for the moment at least

Inspiring learning - run Kingswood activity centre near sheffield (and others in Northumberland, Norfolk, Kent) and offer live in apprenticeships.

Sadik · 27/10/2021 20:21

HelpX has some crazy options too EduCated Grin

Try Angloville and Go Beyond charity although not sure how king placements last, may be too short.

BurbageBrook · 27/10/2021 20:26

*how long

Pipersouth · 27/10/2021 20:32

I did 6 months with community service volunteers staying in the home of a disabled lady getting experience for nursing but that was 20+ years ago so don’t know what they are like now. I loved it got a car to drive -days off and pocket money with a lovely family

cheapskatemum · 27/10/2021 20:35

Look into L'Arche. I know they have a couple of residential homes in Ipswich for adults with LD. Volunteers live on site and support the residents with their daily tasks.

SE13Mummy · 27/10/2021 20:35

What about PGL or similar activity centres?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/10/2021 20:38

Camphill Village Trust. A bit like L’Arche but Steiner philosophy rather than religious.

Sadik · 27/10/2021 20:45

I have friends with links to Camphill Countess, there's been some major changes in recent years, and I think they're very much not what they were, unfortunately

Cyrenians Social Bite village, Edinburgh?

SE13Mummy · 27/10/2021 21:00

Does she sail/is she interested in sailing? There are a number of organisations that operate tall ships voyages which she could attend as a paying guest before being taken on as a volunteer on-board. Another idea would be to look at assistant house parent roles in a boarding school.

Sadik · 27/10/2021 21:12

Definitely not sailing! Cyrenians looks good though. I'm making a list and will pass all these on to her :)

Findhorn maybe? Or Emmaus

MagpieMary · 28/10/2021 01:55

Lendrick Lodge in Scotland is always looking for volunteers.
