Dog people would you buy this type of collar? ?

I posted a few weeks ago about some cat bits I made and got great feedback so here I go again.

I am starting to do craft stalls with homemade pet bits and have made some collars up. These are made with strong polypropylene webbing, extra strong thread and strong welded D ring fittings so will and can handle a dog that pulls.

I am thinking of charging £7 for the 25mm collars and £5 for the 20mm collars.

I like them, but much prefer a buckle to a plastic clip - we have slide tags for ID.

Plus I think a brass buckle looks better.

Jenjenn · 26/10/2021 21:06

We also use only harness for our toy sized doggie but I really like your patterns and your prices are very reasonable. If you do start doing coats, I suggest considering if you can include a small slit in the back so harness users can clip a lead in.

HemanOrSheRa · 26/10/2021 21:06

Definitely! We use harnesses for our dogs, collars are just for their name tags and decoration really. So plastic fittings wouldn't worry me. They are a very good price, I'd pay more for unusual prints. I recently ordered a collar from a local seller, it was £14.99. I could choose the colour of the fittings though. And definitely look at doing smaller sizes! One of my dogs is smaller than a cat Grin.

Honestly? No

They look more pretty than practical

I know you’re using “strong” materials but I don’t think they can necessarily handle a dog that pulls unless you’ve tested them in the market and can attest to that? Dogs are strong

IjustbelieveinMe · 26/10/2021 21:10

I like them and my wheaten terrier wears a similar style with no problems. Yours remind me of these, which is where I buy my dogs leads and collars (I live in Australia).

I would as a house collar for my greyhound.

Good points from PP about not being allowed to use other’s work, ie Disney

2021namechanger · 26/10/2021 21:15

I think they’re lovely.
However for my small dog I can’t use a collar he has to have a harness, (it can be dangerous m) and when I had a larger dog I would worry they are not strong enough.

Would a harness be a possibility.

HarrisMcCoo · 26/10/2021 21:20

Wouldn't last one walk with my dog if she pulled, the buckle would snap🤣🤣

Binglebong · 26/10/2021 21:25

They are really cute! Yes, at that price I would.

Qwertykeys · 26/10/2021 21:32

They look lovely , but I'm with others wouldn't use a plastic fastener.

SirenSays · 26/10/2021 21:33

They're a bit too cutesy for me, I like plain colours. Coloured leathers with brass studs and buckles are my favourites. I also only try to buy collars with a thick padding on the inside.

BeautifulTulips · 26/10/2021 21:44

I love these! I would buy them. I agree with others that they are quite cheap, although you might find you sell a lot at this price especially as it's not a brand. I have just paid £17 for a ruffwear one. I think if you could find a craft fair they would sell well

SandyDays · 26/10/2021 21:47

No I wouldn't, you can't use Disney products without a license, and what guarantees are you offering on the strength of the collar?
It's likely that the fabric would get ruined on walks.

frankie001 · 26/10/2021 22:25

Absolutely love the comic one!!

FenceSplinters · 26/10/2021 22:28

They’re great! A lot of dogs are walked using harnesses nowadays, so the strength of the collar is not necessarily the biggest of issues, as it’s there just to hold a tag really.

Binglebong · 26/10/2021 22:30

I should add my boy has posh collars for days like Christmas- I don't worry about them getting muddy as they don't get the chance. His everyday ones get disgusting! This would definitely qualify as a posh one for us.

KilledByWitches · 26/10/2021 23:33

I prefer a good buckle too.

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 27/10/2021 07:58

I have a 50kg dog as tester Grin so far they've held up perfectly.

NiceTwin · 27/10/2021 08:01

The problem with those collars is they slacken off.
I run a boarding kennels and have a collection of buckled collars to put on dogs that arrive in this type. I cannot afford to lose a dog that can slip a collar.

Mantlemoose · 27/10/2021 08:04

I wouldn't because you are blatantly ignoring all the questions about licensing, copyright etc. Assuming you won't be declaring your income either, Putting legitimate small business owners to shame!

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 27/10/2021 08:12

Mantle..... Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?

I am not ignoring the licensing issue at all I wasn't aware of it and I will be looking into it and change designs accordingly.

Not that it's any of your business... of course I will be declaring my income I already have this in hand and organised ready.

I think they are lovely but my mud magnet spaniel would make it disgusting in no time. I tend to stick to leather collars ad they are comfortable and cope with mud and water really well.

I do put a bandana on her sometimes for special occasions. They are really quick to sew so maybe you could make those too.

Make sure you have the correct insurance for your business is my advice as a fellow small craft business owner in my spare time.

Noducksgiven · 27/10/2021 08:25

That said most use harnesses now so collars are decorative but as my ddog thinks nothing of diving in the mud flats we stick to nylon

Collars with ID tags are actually a legal requirement. Not many pet owners seem to know this going by the number of collarless lost dogs I see on fb. It's even worse now everyone is using harnesses. But dogs should have a collar and a harness in that case.

Your collars are lovely OP. I've been toying with the idea of having a go on my sewing machine but can't imagine doing one in 10 minutes! Grin

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 27/10/2021 08:29

ShesComeUndone already sorted insurance out Grin
