Anyone else watching this and realising how unhealthy we were back then?! No wonder I’ve got a terrible attitude towards food when I ate pizza and chips every day washed down with a can of tango then straight to the tuck shop to spend the remainder of my money on sweets! We did two PE sessions A WEEK and most of those were bunked off to go up town and smoke!

And my god Jet, she hasn’t aged a day! Definitely a good advertisement for healthy living! If only I’d listened…

Enjoying seeing the start of technology, I remember how exciting it was to be able to play on the school PC! Of course no internet so just messed about on Paint and Solitaire.

Oooh no I loved the other years they have shown in the past tho! Will catch up on this Smile

SheWoreYellow · 26/10/2021 19:45

Two PE a week is still standard isn’t it?

But yeah, I had a highland toffee and a can of panda orange fizzy thing at break. Then I’d go and buy a bar of milka chocolate every lunch. Those were the days.

I haven’t been watching the others and fell across this one, I’m glad I did as it’s bringing back all the memories!

I remember the cd encyclopaedia. We took it in turns to use the one computer in the library . It was mind blowing !

Oh I'll have to watch this too!

Yeah I remember pizza and chips for lunch every day, or wandering over the chippy when I was in secondary.

Tuck shop at break time, Freddos, chipsticks.... just loads of chocolate and crisps.

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/10/2021 19:53

I was at secondary school in the 80s, it was just as bad then. We had an ice cream van outside the school at lunchtime, as well as ice cream it also sold hot dogs and those burgers that were boiled (not fried). With cheap runny ketchup. Yum!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/10/2021 19:55

At secondary school my lunch (in the school canteen) every day was two hot dogs (inna bun) with chips, followed by a slice of cheesecake and a doughnut. I also had several very sweet coffees from the vending machine, and as an afternoon pick-me-up, a hot chocolate drunk using a Spira as a straw. On the way to the bus stop at the end of the day I'd grab a blue Slushie and a packet of crisps.

I was sooooooo skinny too. I miss my teenage metabolism!

ParrotsAteThemAll · 26/10/2021 20:01

I would give anything to have my teenage metabolism back!!

in the 80s or late 70s they gave up school meals and brought in a canteen style, where you inevitably chose pizza. i had packed lunch!

DroopyClematis · 26/10/2021 21:24

I haven't quite worked out when school dinners became beige and fatty.
At secondary school, in the 70s , the kitchen staff cooked from scratch and I'll never forget the pies. A huge rectangular pie that was cut into perfect squares and contained meat and veg. Always hoped for a side crust.

Loads of veg sides too.

When I worked at a primary school , until last year, the beige element had really ramped up.
Eg, a SOLID BLOCK of macaroni cheese with a slice of ciabatta type bread. But salad was never eaten. Always refused or thrown away.
Pudding was a beige sponge thing.

The food waste was scandalous.

Puddletown · 26/10/2021 21:31

How can I watch this? Sounds properly nostalgic

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/10/2021 21:34

@DroopyClematis YES to the pies! Mince and veg with lovely pastry.

DroopyClematis · 26/10/2021 21:39

Yes @bendmeoverbackwards , the very best pastry and I still yearn for it!

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/10/2021 21:40

We always had a roast on Wednesdays. We could smell it cooking when we got back from school swimming starving!

DinosApple · 26/10/2021 21:43

I loved watching this show, and made the kids watch too. It's been really good.

The food went beige when the regulations as to nutritional content was scrapped by a Conservative government, I think in the 80s. It was a pretty scandalous decision when you see the effect on lunches in the show.
Snack of choice was a warm from the oven white bun and butter for 25p at my old school Grin.

I loved seeing the tech and hearing the dial up sound. We never had an online lesson at secondary, and only one computer lesson in the whole time (I started in 94), but we had the internet at home quite early.
Jet really did look amazing!

DH was at secondary in the 70s. In his words the teachers were all 60s hippies grown up and very chilled, or very strict ex world war 2 soldiers.

The program really shows the influence of government policy through the ages. I knew my mum didn't pass her 11+ in the 60s. But I had no concept of how limiting that actually was until I watched the show. Poor mum.

DroopyClematis · 26/10/2021 21:50

In the 70s boys had to do Technical Design, woodwork and metalwork. Girls had to do Home Economics and Needlework.
Emphasis on 'had to.'

Utterly soul destroying for so many of us.
But, I can sew a proper seam, put in bust darts, fillet a fish and iron 'a man's shirt' properly!!!!!!!
So really useful 🙄

Meredusoleil · 26/10/2021 21:58

Loved this series when it was on the first time round. I think it's showing again on repeat?

Fond memories of the ice cream van parked at the school gate at lunch times and getting a screwball. Also, being allowed out for lunch in the first place and trusted to return for afternoon lessons!

YesIcan3 · 26/10/2021 22:14

@Puddletown bbc iplayer I think its called "back in time" something like that

I’m feeling very jealous of these ice cream vans you all had! Although we were allowed into town on lunch break where we’d go to the sweet shop and buy individual cigarettes for 10p!!

I was given £1 each day that bought my lunch and sweets! I can’t remember many of my friends bringing their own food, everyone went to the canteen.

Yes I remember the single fags for 10p too. My mates mostly smoked menthol ones called something like Tinsulate?!? Or they would buy a 10 pack which was probably just over a quid.
Meredusoleil · 26/10/2021 22:30

Just looked up the cigarettes. They were called Consulate 😆

Toddlerteaplease · 26/10/2021 23:08

My school did a gorgeous pasta salad. Pasta, sweet corn, tuna and salad cream. It was divine. As was the pizza!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/10/2021 23:11

We were not allowed out at lunchtime. But my metal work teacher, would take me a couple of other people to Tesco if we needed to get stuff for a school event. That was fine until his car got stolen and we were late back!
