That don't break the bank please. Was getting on OK with nutrogena 2 in 1, but seems to have stopped working. Also sane with head and shoulders. It's driving me crazy.

Body shop ginger was ok but not great.

I used t gel cold tar one to clear mine. I now use an oat shampoo bar which hasn't aggravated things.

T gel is expensive for a shampoo but you may only need to use it a few times. I did get it or soemthing similar on prescription at a time. Although getting an appointment now might be the issue.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I know how annoying this is.

Sorry meant to post a link to it....you can get the small bottle for around five pounds.

Thanks, the 2in 1 I used was t gel, I'll try and other one -is it the orange coloured one?

Also, which bar soap do you use? I've tried a few And actually they're pretty good for my scalp but awful for my hair. Can't win!

Is your underactive thyroid medicated? Mine is and it has been a game changer.

I use the Gruum solid shampoo bars which are brilliant, it is a case of trying a few different brands until you find the one which suits you best.

You could try Green People shampoo?

When I got hashimotos my scalp was unbearably inflamed then my hair started dropping out. Scalp wasn't flaky or anything, just felt like it was on fire. It's not cheap but Aesop's rose hair and scalp mask really took the heat out and felt calming.

Aveeno apple cider shampoo seems a reasonable balance for me - as in it makes it slightly better, albeit not perfect, but doesn’t trash my hair too much! Can usually find on offer somewhere (I never pay full price!). Solid bars I find after a few washes sort of build up on my hair. T gel coal tar was sort of good but I think I’m sensitive to sls so after a while it flared that up. Also can stain paler/highlighted hair with repeated use which put me off! I imagine a proper coal tar like poly tar might be better (sls free?) but didn’t want to try it due to staining risk. Another to try is cradle cap shampoo for babies.

I found body shop ginger shampoo crap to be honest although it did smell nice!

I think what works best depends on what is causing the itching.

The Nutrogena one has Coal Tar as the active ingredient for irritation, so perhaps try a shampoo with a different active ingredient or one with higher % of Coal tar. My son uses Alphosyl(£7) which is coal tar based but it works for him when NeutrogenaT Gel didn't.

Nizoral is about £6 for a tiny bottle but it does last and you only need a tiny amount. It has ketoconazole as the active ingredient which inhibits the bacteria that causes flakes.

However, it (an alphosyl, T gel, H&S etc) contains Sodium Lauryl sulphate (SLS) so it foams up well and some people find that is the irritant for their scalp, so you could try an SLS/sulphate free shampoo to see if that helps. Even Herbal Essences now has an SLS free range. OGX is good and my scalp and hair really improved using Shea Moisture shampoo and Green people anti itch (but it is expensive).

The active ingredient in Head and Shoulders is pyrithione zinc. I think that Alpecin Dandruff Killer has a higher % of it than H&S. I've also heard good things about Dead Sea Magik Mineral shampoo that also has Pyrithione zinc in it.
