How to contain heavy periods

As I'm getting older my periods are much heavier. Yesterday at work, despite heavy duty st I bleed through onto my work trousers which were dark do not noticible but still embarrassing. Over night heavy duty pad, pants, swimming shorts and pj bottoms and I still bleed through. Moon Cup won't be the answer as I'm not for pushing things up, never used tampons for the same reason.

This was my life for 10 years. I could only wear night time pads and often that wasn't enough, still bled through. Definitely either go on the mini pill or tranexamic acid. It's not worth it living like this.

Period pants didn’t work for me either I would still leak through and look like Massacre sometimes twice a night. Thankfully on trying mini pill now and seems to be helping.

@makelovenotpetrol

I know someone has said they don't like tranexamic acid but it was an absolute game changer for me. I have heavy periods and I can't use tampons. The tranexamic acid makes my flow about 10x less and I am so so so much more comfortable. I have absolutely no side effects from it whatsoever so I absolutely recommend asking your Dr if you can try it!!
I started on transexamic acid after my iron levels got really low. It was a game changer for me too. Before I’d often feel a bit wobbly on my first day or two of my period. Obviously not normal but I just put up with it and still went to work etc.

Get to a doctor. You need scans to check for any causes of this.

Tena Lady adult nappies were the only thing that helped contain my haemorrhages (I struggle to call them periods).

Mine were due to large fibroids. Mirena coil was useless (bled for over a year on that) so I am now just about to complete a 6 month course of Zoladex injections, which it is hoped will have tipped me into a medically induced menopause. I am 55.

If my haemorrhages periods return in the coming weeks and months then my answer will then be a hysterectomy. That would be a relief, to be honest.

Ibuprofen at regular intervals, or if that isn't sufficient, Naproxen. Also the combined pill helped me considerably.

elliejjtiny · 26/10/2021 11:11

I have really heavy periods. I find a combination of heavy duty cloth pads, period pants, tranexamic acid and ibuprofen work best for me.

NightDreaming · 26/10/2021 11:15

A mooncup and washable pads (used in unison) were a game changer for me. I’m not going to say it will 100% deal with heavy nights, but for me has dramatically reduced the chance off leaking onto the bed.

GoodnightGrandma · 26/10/2021 11:18

I’m two months into a Mirena and it’s stopped the flooding and made my periods lighter. I’m still hoping it will stop them completely.

weegiemum · 26/10/2021 11:22

My periods are now only about every 6 months but I think I save it up for 6 months, blood everywhere and I can feel myself losing clots. I just don't go out, but I'm "lucky" enough to be disabled so am at home most of the time. Last 2 periods have happened on short trips to MILs house (there's no predicting them) and last time we had to buy a new mattress! I use a moon cup and pads and period pants and on the first 2 days can bleed through in an hour. I get no sleep. I'm anaemic and tired. Tried traxenamic acid but it really didn't agree with my stomach. I'm contraindicated hrt due to a kidney condition that's hormone sensitive (both kidney consultants and gynaecologists specialising in hrt have told me this).

No help really, but I sympathise. It's so hard to get help.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 26/10/2021 11:55

Do see your GP I had the same problems and had an endometrial ablation. I never had another period before I reached menopause and it was literally life changing. I was badly anaemic which was exhausting too

chocolatecerealcampingbrekkie · 26/10/2021 12:04

Honestly the best thing to do is speak to your gp about it so they can give you some advice or medication
Also you need to speak to your boss. As it sounds like you need to be able to change pads/ clothing regularly.

AnotherEmma · 26/10/2021 12:04

See GP and ask for investigations into underlying cause
Consider hormonal coil (I have Kyleena which is newer, smaller and lower dose than Mirena, still works for 5 years)
Menstrual cup - I know OP doesn't want to use one but for anyone else on this thread with heavy periods, they are a game changer. Plenty of different types, I have and like the Meluna (although haven't had to use it since getting the coil).
Plus cloth sanitary pad and/or period pants.

snackess · 26/10/2021 18:29

Another vote for period pants! Absolutely revolutionary. I use modibodi and I do have to use their maxi ones on my heaviest days but I've never leaked.
Quite an initial outlay but well worth it!

campista · 26/10/2021 20:08

Silverswirl, you remind me of me! Post meno now, though, thank goodness. I did all the things you said, plus a towel on my car seat.
I never understand the adverts for sanpro where women are doing sports?!
