Hi 👋

I have been to do my family tree. But I have no idea what I'm doing. I done the ancestry dna. I'm just wondering if there is a cousin match that says 2nd-3rd cousin. Would that be my auntie child Confused

I thought second cousins were your cousins DC although I'm prepared to be corrected on that one.

AdelindSchade · 25/10/2021 19:03

Your aunts child would be your first cousin. 2nd would be your parents cousin

CruCru · 25/10/2021 19:03

Your aunt’s child would be your first cousin.

If you and your first cousin were to both have a child, those children would be second cousins.

If those second cousins were to have children, they would be third cousins.

Yes or your cousins dc.

CruCru · 25/10/2021 19:04

If your first cousin were to have a child, you and that child would be first cousins once removed (because you would be a generation ahead of that child).

AdelindSchade · 25/10/2021 19:05

So what is mum's cousin or cousin's dc then? Is that the 'once removed' business?

This is a really useful relationship chart.

Spot on.

With ancestry you need to ignore the predicted relationship and look at the amount of shared cM. Then you can look at a chart like the one previously posted to see all the possible relationships.

baileyb2 · 25/10/2021 20:04

Please will someone tell me what cM means.

fridayisherefinally · 25/10/2021 20:12

@baileyb2

Please will someone tell me what cM means.
"A centimorgan (abbreviated as “cM”) describes the length of a piece of DNA. It is a unit of measurement. More specifically, it measures the distance between two chromosome positions. A shared DNA segment is a chunk of genetic material shared between two individuals."
Itsstillme · 25/10/2021 20:54

@fridayisherefinally so does that mean the heigher the cm is the closer related you are?

Yes. Use this tool and put in the number of shares cM and it'll give you all the possible relationships.
