My DD (nearly 4) started having a temperature Thursday night. It was about 38.6 I gave her calpol and she went to sleep. Since then Friday and Saturday shes been having temperatures and 39.8 has been the highest yet. Sunday morning she was having a temperature (again 39.something) which I kept bringing down with calpol but by evening it was getting better. When she went to bed last night she didn't have a temperature at all but I gave her calpol anyway. All this morning and afternoon she was fine but from around 4 her temperature has been climbing up. She went for a nap as feeling unwell and feels hot to the touch but she got annoyed with my trying to check her temperature right now so I don't know what it is . Before she went for the nap her temp was 38.6 and I gave her calpol but it doesn't seem to have worked about 2 hours later as still hot to the touch. On Saturday I called nhs111 and they referred me to my closest pharmacy like they were doing me a big favour. The pharmacist said to give calpol and neurofen and Tixylix for her cough. I gave her Neurofen on Saturday and it didn't bring her temp down at all. It was creeping up and an hour later she was a 39.8 . I stopped giving her neurofrn as it didn't help at all. I was thinking of booking an appointment with the gp this morning , but last night and this morning she was well so didn't have a reason to call them at the time. Now her temperature is back. The pharmacist was very helpful on Saturday (during telephone conversation) but said that this might continue into early this week but also mentioned that I may have to speak to someone re.this later. It seemed like he was suggesting to just manage to keep her temp down until maybe we can get an appointment with gp? But I am not sure. If her temp continues should I book an appointment to see a gp or wait and see? Also if she doesn't have a temp in the morning should I try and book an appointment anyway because it seems like she temp mostly increases in the night? We've done a covid test and it's negative. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Please be kind , I am very worried right now and I am not feeling too well either. Sorry if my post is confusing. Happy to clarify anything.

@WaltzingTilda

Thank you so much for you replies. Her temp has just gone down...I am definitely going to speak to gp tomorrow regardless of whether she has a temp tomorrow morning or not. If her temp comes back again I will call 111 . If they don't refer me to an out of hours gp then I will take her to a&e.
Sounds like you have a good plan there OP. Trust your gut, you know your DD best.

I went on a first aid course recently and the instructor was also a part time ambulance man. He highly recommended the NHS website and said they use it themselves sometimes if they're unsure about something. Also calling 111 so they can direct you to the right place to go, waiting times etc.

Definitely see GP am but if you are worried call 111 tonight, I'd imagine they might want her seen in OOH with a couple of wee concerns (length of fever and not responsive to antipyretics), does she have any rash or extra red eyes/mouth or tongue? I wouldn't worry too much about eating at the moment, kids tend to go off food when poorly and then shovel it in the second they are better but make sure she is drinking plenty.

111 is a tick box exercise but as a triage tool to how quickly you need to speak to a trained clinician. They tend to verge on the side of caution but I know with myself I absolutely would refuse to phone to save having to go through ED but with the kids I'd rather call and sound like an anxious mum than miss something.

Thank you to everyone for replying. I am very grateful for your replies. Dd's temperature went back to normal last evening and stayed normal throughout. I had a telephone consultation with the gp this morning and they prescribed antibiotics for her. Hopefully she'll be on the mend soon . Thank you so much once again SmileFlowers

thanks for update, good to know she's better and has meds.

Glad your little one is OK. Mine never wants to eat when he's unwell. If you wanted to get some calories into her I find things like hot chocolate with whole milk and smoothies/ milkshake with oats, honey, fruit and yoghurt added do the trick rather than actual food.

The temperature isn’t the problem

We need fevers for a reason and they are really important.

What is also important is WHY she’s having the fevers.

If she’s had a fever for more than 4 days. I would definitely ask to speak to a gp. I’d ring 111 back.

Nocutenamesleft · 26/10/2021 16:33

Oh. And a 4 yr okd should never be given cough medicine! I’m so surprised the pharmacist said that

Coughing is also really important! We shouldn’t try to stop a cough. It’s protecting the chest.
