Are Chesterfield sofas comfy, honestly?

I am looking at replacing our sofas with chesterfields but I am worried they may be really uncomfortable because there is very little back support as they are so low.

I keep looking at the sofa we are about to replace and we lean against the back of it iykwim and the chesterfield I am looking at would be much lower with hardly any back.

I love them to look at but are they comfy as a main sofa!

I had the same reservations but went with them anyway. Really comfortable and always look neat and tidy because there are less cushions slipping about.

Oh that’s good to hear! Are they comfy for cold afternoons when you just want to slouch on the sofa?

Love mine! It 'hugs' you. We've had it for years and it wasn't new when we bought it, it's a traditional style one.

We still have our chesterfield chair from 30 years ago and only threw out the sofa 5 years ago.

We had big throws over the ends for snuggles.

I warn you though, you MUST look after it and condition it with leather 'feeder.' Don't use anything like baby wipes , or household spray or it'll start to crack in the long term.

I love the way they look neat without having to plump up the cushions, I miss ours.

I have found mine ideal for slouching.
The backs and sides are high enough for support but low enough for me to curl up with iPad on the arm/back, with or without cushions, heated throw, etc.
If you want some head support, they're no good. Probably why they sometimes supply matching wing armchairs, although they're not for me.

Oh, it isnt a leather one I am looking at, so not a traditional chesterfield. It is fabric but exactly the same style as a chesterfield.

I have one, haven’t finished paying for it but I hate it and really want a new one. Won’t be happening though because of the cost.

P.S the cushions do slip, and I need loads of cushions on it for comfort.

I am so glad you’ve asked this because the Next Gosford corner sofa is like a Chesterfield and it’s between this and one other. We use our sofa for everything - I sleep on it a lot because sometimes I get uncomfortable in bed, we eat on it, I nap during the day on it and we have pets. It just looks really uncomfortable for sleeping on but I didn’t have the balls to lay on it in store.

We have this set OP. It’s not leather, like a suedey fabric. It’s soooo comfortable, it has high backs, especially if you put your feet up on the foot stalls and recline. Absolutely love it and it always looks so neat!

I have two chesterfields one fairly new one and one about 60 years old.
I absolutely love them. My favourite is the older one. It is used by my grandchildren to cuddle up on with a throw x

I have a next gosford sofa and I love it - so comfy.

We have 2 and older one which is amazing and a newer next one!

If you like slouching or sleeping make sure to test the depth of the seats (our old one is noticeably smaller by design and because the back padding is thicker) I couldn't sleep on it.
If you've got kids between 18months - 28 don't get a fabric one, the buttons hold an astonishing amount of bogies. At least the leather can be sprayed with antibac once in a while.

See that is a lot higher at the back than the one I am looking at.

@Shuttheblinds my friend has this one in teal. It is beautiful but I'm not sure how hard wearing it would be. She protects it with matching throws x

@MusingOnStarlight the gosford is the one I have and hate.

Clearly in the minority but we have a leather Chesterfield and I hate it. It’s so uncomfortable, nothing to properly rest into, leather always cold and weird and sticky and the cushions are too foamy. I dunno. It’s all awful. My parents have a lovely feathery sofa and it’s glorious.

I viewed the M&S one and didn’t like it. It wasn’t deep enough to sit on and I like a deep sofa.

I have the next gosford. The cushion covers slip so basically once a week I have to unzip the covers to move them back into position and re zip them. I have the corner sofa and the corner cushion is the worst even though we don’t even really sit on that cushion.

The back is firm and not high enough so it’s just not comfortable. I like to lay on a sofa but it then pushes your neck at a hard angle. We got it because it is gorgeous and I’d had enough of plumping pillows and cushions constantly. Well, sadly I have covered it in cushions for comfort and I spend just as much time trying to make it look presentable.

The cushions also tilt towards the back so if you try to lay on it to sleep, you’re on a camber which is just irritating. You can only sleep on one side otherwise you feel like you’re suffocating on the back of it.

I have an ancient Chesterfield that will have to be replaced soon and I don't think we'll get another, they offer no back support or comfort but I love they way they look.

We haven't looked after it in latter years sadly and the leather is wearing and seats ripped but that's my kids jumping all over it as little ones. Interesting what a pp said about leather feeder, I only ever wiped ours with a cloth and dried it straight away, regret that now....

I haven’t seen the M&S one in person ChorizoJacketPotato so that is interesting, I prefer deeper sofas too. I won’t order one until I have actually been to the store and sat in it, and I might change my mind now.

I’m with @pennysays. My mums always had leather chesterfields and I hate them , hard and slippery and rigid. I have leather sofas but they are squishy and comfortable and you can relax into them. I would never have a chesterfield.

I hate leather sofas but like deep buttoning. I also do NOT want to be straightening / plumping seat or back cushions all the time. We went with the loaf Dixie which is a more modern Chesterfield inspired sofa imo, and you can get in fabric. Really happy with it; it’s 7-8 years old and still looks new.
