What does the email look like if you’ve won the lottery

I’ve won a few fivers in the past and £30 last night 🎉 and each time I’ve received an email that says something like ‘you’ve won a prize on the national lottery’ and then you have to log in to your account to see what it is. Every time I get one of these emails I have a tiny flicker of hope that it’s the jackpot, but I just wondered if anyone knows if you still get this email if you win a massive prize or do they jazz it up a bit and make it a bit more exciting-sounding? Or is it just the standard one and fireworks go off or something when you actually log in to your account? Thanks in advance to any lottery millionaires who might know this Grin

Wasn't there a discussion on here recently and one winner said they had to wait quite a long time for the money, had to open a new account etc

I think when it's a really big prize, they usually open an account for you at Coutts. I don't know if this is compulsory, because most banks have an executive type of account which could handle this amount of money, eg HSBC Premier.

And here is a very interesting article, from the guy [Andy] who talks to Jackpot winners, on the phone. He is responsible for doing the ID check. Apparently, you need to phone the Lottery, if you win the jackpot, whether you buy the ticket online or at a retail outlet.
Apparently, Andy will then visit your home and does a thorough identity check.
The e-mail is always identical, regardless of the amount you win. This is for security reasons.
So, for those who play online, don’t expect to receive a phone call from Lottery HQ, if you win the Javkpot. You will need to check your account and then phone the telephone number, provided.
And then Andy will guide you through the next steps!

I'm a National Lottery expert - this is what happens when you win the lotto

@MrKodama Do you know if you have to open a special bank account, eg at Coutts, or can you deposit your winnings in your ordinary savings account? Or maybe upgrade to an executive account with your bank?

MrKodama · 18/02/2024 17:52

There is a 1/139,000,000 chance of winning the jackpot, so maybe talk to Andy [the lottery jackpot liaison manager], when and if this happens.
But, I am pretty sure, the lottery team that will visit your house, if you win the jackpot, can set up as many bank accounts, as you require.
It is advised that you split your winnings between several bank accounts, so that if a bank goes out of business, you don’t lose all your money. The bank only guarantees up to £85K.
So, yes, you can use any bank account, but you should place most of the money, into a high interest account. Most banks allow you to create a cascade system, that will keep the total in your current account, at the same level, by transferring money, automatically, from a higher interest account, when the amount drops below a certain threshold.
Anyway, good luck! 🙂

@MrKodama That's assuming you're going for the jackpot! But winning the Millionaire Maker raffle has much better odds, especially on a Tuesday, more like 1/5.36 million. Still extremely unlikely, I grant you, but if you combine a special multiple draw with a large number of tickets, you really can bring the odds down.. Which you can't do by matching numbers.

I've won the odd £5 and a few lucky dips but I have never yet had an email. Do you have to specifically sign up for email notifications?

Are you an online player? You only get an email if you play online. Otherwise you have to check your ticket manually.

Tzimi · 19/02/2024 17:28

@JustLyra So do they have to open a special account for you if it's a big sum? Can't you just deposit any sum into your ordinary savings account, or maybe upgrade it to an executive one?

Tzimi · 21/02/2024 00:27

@tensmum1964 As long as you've entered your current email address in the settings, they will notify you if you win.

Two points:

  1. Andy looks like Mr Tumble
  2. I've just bought a Euromillions ticket based on whoever said the Millionaire Maker has better odds. See you here Tuesday to tell you how the email comes.

One of the easiest lotteries to win something is Thunderball. There's a 1 in 8 million chance of winning the £500,000 jackpot, but much better chances of winning a small prize. If you select from the most probable numbers, you can win enough to self-fund your games most of the time.

By cheque??

I mean, obviously I'd be thrilled anyway, but cheque? What a ball ache!!
@hazelnutpraline I wish I could tell you from personal experience. I can tell you to £8.50 they definitely put it on your lottery account 🤣

I'll update you if I have more applicable experience tomorrow 🤞🏼

But you can pay a cheque into your account online! Don't have to go to bank

You can also pay it in at your post office-although you probably wouldn't stay anonymous for long!
