Apologies if this has typos etc but I am losing my mind. Tried to make an online purchase about 2 hours ago and when I got to checkout my card was declined. I've plenty of funds in the account but went into my phone app anyway. To my horror, the account page only shows my isa and loan account, with no evidence at all that I have a current account. Tried again on my laptop and the same happened. Been on live chat with natwest and all they suggest is getting in touch with the fraud team after 8am tomorrow. WTF!!, I'VE been trying to call the natwest but just keep getting a stupid message saying they're busy. What can I do? I'm going around the bend HELP

My NW credit card details for the whole month of Oct (or so far) vanished last night but reappeared today

My NatWest app also says there will be maintenance overnight tonight. If it’s any consolation my HSBC app does this sometimes - but with my credit card. It just disappears for a few hours and then comes back. My current and ISA still show though.

Update : just as I was downing the last of my wine, they answered. Long story short, they locked the account as they suspected unusual activity. Apparently a lot of account holders are querying unauthorized payments to GUESS EU, and I had actually just tried to purchase stuff from Guess in Italy, which was the transaction that was declined. So they locked my account... To be on the safe side. I understand they want to safeguard customers, but they could at least have tried to contact me. 🙄. Anyway, panic over, and thank you all so much for your replies. Off to open another bottle now.. For the trauma 😃

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend being drunk on the phone to your bank if you’re trying to get your account unblocked!

YourFinestPantaloons · 23/10/2021 22:50

This happened to me before, I shit myself! It was some sort of admin error, and was sorted fairly quickly IIRC I got compensation too

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... Yep, my stomach was in knots! Mmm.. Compensation for the trauma and inconvenience 🤔. I think I'll send them a strongly worded email tomorrow x

Poor you. I really empathise. This must have been awful and I'm glad you sorted it out.

I am sorry to say this but the way you are talking about wine unsettled me. I had a drink problem for a number of years and I used to drink like this. ie. have a bit to relax, then a lot more if something stressful happened followed by even more whether the problem was solved or got worse. In other words, any excuse to drink. You don't need me to tell you the harm it does to your body over time. For me it also wrecked my mental health gradually. First of all, the morning after beer fear, then not being able to sleep properly, then little by little paranoia etc.

I'll get my coat. I know this comment will be unwelcome. Please just consider it though.

Thank you for your concern, and I know you're coming from a good place, but I don't use drink as a coping mechanism. The last time I had a drink was last Saturday when I went out for a meal. The only reason I was drinking tonight is because a lovely client bought me a bottle of Sancerre, which is my favourite wine. In hindsight, drinking before such an important phone call was perhaps not the most sensible idea.

Again, thank you for your concern and I'm not offended x

Natwest blocked my card once as I ordered pizza on a Wednesday night. Yes, it was unusual activity for me, but surely we should be spontaneous once in a while! Grin

ginislife · 23/10/2021 23:16

I've had warnings today that there's maintenance taking place overnight

TheFairyCaravan · 23/10/2021 23:57

NatWest blocked our account once because I answered the wrong questions on security. I said I’d used my card in the pet shop when it was DH’s. Anyhow, both of us had to go to the nearest branch which is 13miles away to get it unlocked. However when we got there the woman did all the checks with identity and our cards then gave me a number to ring so that the fraud department could finally unlock it.

DH said he was going to change banks but I said at least they take —extreme— measures to keep our money safe

Jesus fucking Christ.

MN needs to learn that not everyone who has a drink is an alcoholic. What a pathetic and patronising post. Don't judge people by your standards.

Did you get sorted OP

Hi there and thanks for asking, my update is above. I'm going to complain to the bank tomorrow as I literally had 4 hours of anxiety induced panic attacks, trying to get through to a human being!! Argghh!! No bloody frustrating and, yes, I did have another bottle of wine 😃

All sorted then?

My bank usually texts me for authorisation if it's suspicious about any transaction, eg unusual pattern or frequency, but it doesn't happen that often.

I say bank, but I don't actually use the card attached to my bank for much at all really as I do all my spending on a cashback credit card that is paid off in full by direct debit each month.

As well as earning cashback, there's the added advantage of, that if there's ever a suspect of fraud and the account is frozen, it doesn't affect my main account and cause issues for direct debits etc. Something to consider?

Yes, allegations sorted. Account now unlocked so I've been able to start my online Christmas shopping. Thanks for asking and I think I'll apply for a credit card and do my shopping on that. Great idea 🙂
