Covid food for people who can't taste things

Any other sufferers out there? Got covid, and having no sense of taste or smell is driving me mad, finding it difficult to cook as I have no idea what the things I am making taste like Hmm. I do usually cook a lot from scratch so really a bit flummoxed as to what to do. I can't keep dumping tons of chili in everything Blush so has anyone got any ideas of things with...nice textures? Things they could nearly taste? Or anything that I can cook that won't be really odd to eat? Because tbh most things are odd without flavour, e.g. mash is really grim, I'm finding textures really weird generally! I had an ice lolly and that was quite nice but I can't serve up lollies for dinner...

Thank you!

I lived off multiseed bread with a thick layer of marmite! Could just get a tiny bit of sensation from the marmite.
And lots of fruit.

Kwackerly · 23/10/2021 21:18

Oh that's a good idea , I love marmite. I'll try that.

Fruit has been fine for me too, isn't that odd.Vegetables seem much harder to eat, I am blending them into soups but I might as well be eating wallpaper paste... Thank you!

My MIL ate things she had always liked the texture/temperature of - chickpeas in warm broth, cold fruit sorbet, crisps, carrot sticks.

I seemed to want tuna, grapes and tonic water!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/10/2021 21:41

I kept eating mashed potatoes, even though I couldn't taste or smell. Soup was regular too, Tomato with Worcestershire sauce in.

ItsAlwaysThere · 23/10/2021 21:45

I'm all for texture and sensation right now, so have eaten crispy things, very cold things (like fruit from the fridge), salty things. Then forcing myself to eat chunky veg soups for some nutrients.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/10/2021 21:47

Fruit is currently tasting disgusting to me. Lots of salt and also lots of black pepper works on soup. I'm not eating much! I live on my own so no need to bother myself cooking. I've been quite unwell, even heating soup is exhausting.

Fruit was really the only thing I could stomach. Had some soups when I felt I should have something warm. Cold grapes from the fridge. Melon.
I felt very sick with it all the time.

I hadn't realised I had lost my taste until I had a glass of tonic and thought it was plain fizzy water.

I found fizzy water was good. I drank loads of that. And surprisingly pepsi max which isn't something I'd normally have.
Carrot sticks in homemade houmous went down well too once I could eat something. I ended up with anti sickness meds as I felt so nauseous all the time.

DampSquidGames · 23/10/2021 22:28

I could only eat toast with marmalade and drink a small amount of water.

DampSquidGames · 23/10/2021 22:29

Breathmiller I had to get the anti sickness meds too, it felt like a cross between morning and extreme travel sickness.

DampSquidGames · 23/10/2021 22:29

Crisps we’re good too.

Oh that's interesting. I hadn't heard of it being so bad so it surprised me. And yes, it was like having morning sickness and being at sea the whole time.
DampSquidGames · 23/10/2021 22:32

My GP diagnosed vertigo, I then googled vertigo and Covid and it’s definitely a thing.

FindingMeno · 23/10/2021 22:38

I didn't find anything better or worse for eating but sympathise with the cooking difficulties.
I was surprised at how much I use my sense of smell when cooking, and it's very disconcerting!

emmy4 · 23/10/2021 22:40

Rice with soy sauce, salt and pepper got me through.

Kwackerly · 24/10/2021 07:54

Thank you all so much there are some good ideas to try here.

@DampSquidGames I had vertigo last time I had covid, a terrible couple of months where I had to take anti nausea remedies every day, it was like being drunk and the room spinning, all the time, absolutely awful and you have my sympathyFlowers.
