Someone just rear-ended DH and drove off

DH was on his way to a clinic to give Covid booster jabs. He was stationary in one lane when a driver basically rear-ended the side of the vehicle (badly, and at some speed) and then sped off. DH is fine.

I know there's no way the person who did it will be caught (the police could not have been less interested) but if anyone's experienced this, do you have any advice regarding things you did / wish you had done?

I've thought of:

  • telling insurers about the child seats as they may need replacing
  • taking photos of damage
  • phoning police
  • phoning insurance

... anything else I should be considering?

Did he get the registration number?

Babybellblue · 23/10/2021 14:24

Report to your insurer straight away giving them the police crime number. They may have your reg number and might try and pull a fast one and try and claim against you.
This is really really important to do now.

I forgot to say I've worked in car insurance and you wouldn't believe the scams that go on.

Yes to investing in a dash cam.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 23/10/2021 14:47

No, no registration - the vaguest of descriptions of the vehicle. Ironically I ordered dash cams a few days ago as it is a new (to us) car, and waiting for them to arrive :(

It was at a junction with traffic lights. I wonder if anyone else's dash cam / the traffic light cameras caught anything?

We have a police reference number which has been given the the insurers, and the approved repair people are collecting the car from us on Monday.

Car seems drive-able - DH was right next to the vax centre when he pulled over so he's gone to work and is going to drive home later (in the light) as insurance say that's okay.

Glad it's getting sorted quickly OP. As regards witness cameras... the insurer won't really bother unfortunately. There are hundreds of these cases daily.

Its unfair because its your no claims you will lose and a hefty hike in your premium next year. It sucks.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 23/10/2021 15:03

Yeah, it feels extremely unfair. At least we paid to protect our no claims discount.
