Bloody dry socket

I had my wisdom tooth extracted last Saturday and I’ve got a dry socket. I had it packed at the dentist with the smelly stuff yesterday which gave me great relief but it’s worn off now and I feel like ripping my face off again.

How long is it going to take to heal?!

I am in similar position. Just off to see emergency dentist. It is so awful. I had a tooth extracted not wisdom but have horrible taste in my mouth. I think it is infected.

Popsicales · 23/10/2021 12:37

Yep mines infected too. He said to come back after the weekend if it continues. I’ve honestly never had pain like this. I had two children at home without pain relief and this is worse Sad. I can’t believe it’s been a week. @cansu when did you have yours extracted?

Can you go to an out of hours dentist and get it repacked? It honestly was the only thing that helped.

Call the dentist and tell them.
I had an tooth out on Tuesday (non wisdom, but the bugger was fused and I needed stitches!) and dry socket was my biggest fear. Not helped with me coming down with Covid the next day!
Honestly, push to get it re-packed.
Stagger your pain killers. I feel so bad for you! Flowers

I have just recovered from this - sympathy, it was awful.

I had my tooth out on the Thursday. The real dry socket pain started on the Saturday and was pretty awful. I went to the dentist on the following Thursday who packed it with the stuff, and that did help a lot but it still continued to be painful until I would say a week after (although not as bad).

It's been three weeks now since my extraction and I feel completely back to normal.

garlictwist · 23/10/2021 12:40

Oh yes and the horrible taste lasted longer than the pain did! Really rank.

You need to go to a dentist and get painkillers as well. It sounds like its infected

Popsicales · 23/10/2021 12:53

I’m with a private dentist as I couldn’t find an NHS one but he’s closed today. Do you think I’d be able to access the nhs emergency dentist even though I usually go private?

@Popsicales yes I managed to my contacting 111 . They gave me details of my nearest out of hours dentist to attend. At about 10 -14 days things did start to improve. I had tramadol at one point and that didn't take the edge off so completely sympathise with you.

Popsicales · 23/10/2021 15:07

No look with the emergency dentist. They’ve said they have nothing left for today and I’ve just got to ring back at 8am tomorrow. I know it’s not their fault but it’s so frustrating not being able to get an appointment and there being no alternative.

I have antibiotics. Yes 111 provided a face to face appointment. Dentist reckons it could be infection or could simply be trauma on gums from difficult extraction. Socket has clot and is starting to heal. I decided against him disturbing clot to wash it out. I am going to give it a couple of days and take the antibiotics to see if it improves. Bloody awful though. Hope you get to see someone soon. Dental treatment in this country is absolutely dreadful. I only ended up having to lose this tooth because of failed root canal. I could have had expensive endodontic treatment of 800 and potentially saved the tooth if I had the money of course.

Trisolaris · 24/10/2021 11:17

I’m on week 2 of this. Mouth taste is getting a bit better but am still on constant painkillers.

What has also helped us getting one of those anaesthetic sprays to numb your throat and aiming that at the back corner of my mouth and then letting it drip into the hole.

Have you got clove oil which I think is the smelly stuff the dentists use?

Somethingsnappy · 24/10/2021 12:37

Yes, I think they pack it with some sort of sterile gauze and clove oil. Could you do it yourself, with advice from a pharmacist? I know what it's like, it's awful. But I think it's quite simple to sort it out. Frustrating you can't see a dentist, but perhaps you can cobble something together.
