Help with iPhones please?! Yes plural - getting hot!

Just got a new phone today.

Was due an upgrade anyway but have also been having lots of problems with "old" phone with it getting hot and the battery has basically had it!

If I was planning to keep that phone I would have prob gone to Apple to get it sorted.

Definitely thought it was the phone

Today "new" phone - iPhone 12 mini arrived, great stuff all excited...

The charger cable that came with it is a usb-c one so couldn't connect it to ANY of the adapters I currently own to charge the phone and set it up.

Umpteen calls to provider and Apple on this and some other stuff I needed to check

Was told by both provider and Apple I'd be fine using the regular charger cables I used for old phone to charge it. I have a couple actual apple ones and a couple "3rd party" ones (I like long cables and apple don't really do these)

So...initially popped it on charge on current long 3rd party cable - charging fine but it got really hot which I don't think is good for it and I don't wanna wreck a new phone

So changed it to an Apple charging hardware setup I even switched to a different socket - it STILL got super hot!

Why is this happening? What can I do to prevent it and is it gonna fuck up my new phone?

I'm finding this really worrying

Oh also my home is far from hot I tend to run warm myself and I haven't even got my ch on yet! If it's the ambient temps messing with it then come summer it's screwed!

It could be that it’s doing a lot of work setting itself up and downloading your back up. I’d not worry too much for now, but if it’s still the same in a day or two, then go to apple.

I hope you're right.

It's not just a bit warm it's roasting! Taking ages to cool down too.

Also browsing Argos for an appropriate adapter and worried I'll get the wrong thing - plus I'm really annoyed I have to pay extra for this! The lack of this item in the phone package doesn't appear to be reflected in price! Bloody cheeky of apple!

My iPhone 13 mini was super hot when I charged it on the first day too. (And I was using the charger that came with it, and the new Apple plug I had to buy.) Apparently it's a thing with the mini phones, the batteries are so small but so powerful that they get hot when they charge.

The phone has a lightening connection- use your existing charger

clockover · 22/10/2021 22:27

Also it's normal for some heat to generate when they are charging. So long as it's not too hot to touch you should be right.

No case on it it's brand new, no screen protector nothing

Thanks for adapter link

@AlbertBridge hoping you're right but it was getting SO hot I was genuinely fearing for damage! It's ridiculous

I'm a looooong standing iPhone user never had ANY of this with my previous phones (iPhone 4 and then an original SE never had problems like this with them! And they were small phones)

@clockover yes I'm aware lightning connection too hot to touch is almost right! It's pretty close to that point!

Not even at 100% charge around 50% and I keep having to take it off charge and turn it off to cool it down

Currently charging via the cable that came with it (can't help but think the REASON they've moved away from the regular usb connection is to bloody make us buy the sodding adapters! That and this crap with not inc in the product - with as I said NO reflection of this in the price!)

Their argument is "less packaging better for environment" which is bollocks as now I'm gonna have to buy it separate as I'm sure many customers have had to do meaning possibly unnecessary travel to buy one OR ordering online and those retailers then need to transport them AND the Packaging of the adapters! So I don't think it will actually have made a difference environmentally!

Also I have a power bank I have been using for old phone at times to get me through until I could get this one on upgrade, so I tried that too

Here's a weird thing - the power bank and the phone connected the phone doesn't get charged by the power bank (so that's now no use to me!)

BUT if I plug the power bank in as if to charge it AND connect the phone to the power bank (so sort of using the power bank as a de facto adapter I guess) that charges the phone

It's charging via laptop just now - still super hot

You don't have to buy an adapter though, you already have lightning chargers.

I know they were small phones but the new batteries are more powerful.

It's not a problem I have come across and I think we have had every model over the years in this house. DD has the 12 mini and it's absolutely fine, well actually I have just realised I have no idea if it gets hot on charge because I just plug it in each morning and leave it be. Maybe it does Blush
