Did your senior school have pastoral care?

Just reading a book that had a comment about a school had changed since the early 2000's and now had pastoral care.

Back in the 70's, my state school had a school Councillor then ( a brilliant brilliant man) and I wondered if that was usual and when your school had that sort of care.

In theory, yes. In reality, no.

HarrietOh · 22/10/2021 15:00

No, not in late 90s early 00s anyway. Wish it had done though, I had some of the worst years of my life and there was no help back then.

actiongirl1978 · 22/10/2021 15:00

Yes. Catholic school. Incredible caring staff in the 90s. Each and every child looked after.

80s/90s. Not an official role. Obviously some teachers were more caring than others, we had the same form tutor and head of house all the way through school.
I’m amazed at all the non teaching roles in secondary schools nowadays! And all the leadership teams and multiple deputy heads, and counsellors and careers advisors etc etc.

Sirzy · 22/10/2021 15:09

Nothing to the degeee the same school has now

MrsBungle · 22/10/2021 15:10

We were allocated a ‘guidance teacher’. I think pastoral stuff was their remit but I’m not sure! This was early-mid 90s.

RobinPenguins · 22/10/2021 15:11

Yes. Late 90s/early 00s Catholic girls’ comp. There was a counsellor and other pastoral support staff, I thankfully never needed to speak to anyone but friends did and found it really helpful.

SheWoreYellow · 22/10/2021 15:11

Nothing except a form teacher. And it never occurred to any of us to mention anything personal to them.

FindingMeno · 22/10/2021 15:14

Not that I remember ( 80's)
Teachers taught and/or punished and it was a rare one who operated beyond those two modes!

YerAWizardHarry · 22/10/2021 15:15

We had guidance teachers. 2005-2011 in a Scottish state secondary school

merryhouse · 22/10/2021 15:15

I don't think there was anyone whose only title was pastoral - but everyone knew that the form tutors and heads of year were supposed to be for that sort of thing.

Which of course in practice meant just about everyone. I think we assumed the Deputy Heads had umbrella responsibility (certainly I remember thinking that was one of the reasons why KS3 had one man and one woman and the college had 4 not all the same sex).

1980s, school built early 70s.

number87inthequeue · 22/10/2021 15:32

Form tutors, and head of year were supposed to help anyone who needed it (early 90s). In reality, tI don't know anyone who ever spoke about anything personal to the (mainly male middle aged) form tutors. Head of 6th form tried to be best mates with all the popular kids, under the guise of offering pastoral support (to the extent that a group of them often went to parties and sleepovers at her place). A male friend of mine came out as gay in 6th form (in those days this was quite a big deal for him) and her approach to 'counselling' was to try to set him up with her middle aged gay friend. Even back then we knew that was a bit creepy.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/10/2021 15:34

No counsellors or anything like. Head of Year did the pastoral stuff. 90s. Bog standard comp.

MrsKDB · 22/10/2021 15:35

90s comp. absolutely not.

Aliveandkicking23 · 22/10/2021 15:53

Catholic school in the 50/60's each year had their own.
Our pastoral carer was Miss Hobson (retired teacher)for our year, started as we began high school and left as we finished school.
Unfortunately she was incharge of telling us the facts of life.
As a unmarried lady and a committed virgin all we were told was that after the priest had said we were now legally married our sex life will be lovely.
Class dismissed.

CMOTDibbler · 22/10/2021 15:57

80's comp, I guess you might have been expected to speak to your form tutor about anything like that, but no one would have

Maggiesgirl · 22/10/2021 16:00

Mr Paulley was our Councillor. He had his own office which you could just go and knock on his door at anytime. He was at the school for a long long time. An absolutely lovely caring wonderful man. He only died a couple of years ago and although I have long left the area I still have contacts there who said there was a lovely tribute from lots of past and present students at the school.

This was a bog standard state school.as well. I came there in 1974 and he was already there then.

No one specific just form tutor/HoY, 00-05.

PaperMonster · 22/10/2021 16:07

1980s - no pastoral staff at either secondary I attended.

RedMarauder · 22/10/2021 16:10

80's/90's comp in inner London - yes but no-one had a specific title covering it.

It was one of main duties of the Head of Year and one of the Deputy Heads, but your Form Tutor and other teachers would be involved.

@WhatsWrongWithMyUsername I had two Deputy Heads at my school. One of my nephews went to a different but nearby school in the early 00s followed by other people I know, and they had four.

Danikm151 · 22/10/2021 16:13

Yes early 2000s we had the pastoral team who were great

Scarby9 · 22/10/2021 16:14

No in the 1970s.
I suppose our form tutor would have been the person to speak to? But nothing was ever said.

MissyB1 · 22/10/2021 16:24

No none at our Catholic school in the 80s, I desperately needed it though. I did speak to a teacher about my unhappy home situation, (my dad was very ill and my relationship with my mum was horrendous), but she mumbled something about help your mum more and that was that! No one followed it up, I was ignored afterwards and things got worse at home.

crossstitchingnana · 22/10/2021 16:30

I was at primary school in the 70s and secondary school in the 80s. Pastoral care? 🤣 At primary all the SEN kids were in one "remedial" class and we were caned o smacked for wrong-doings. At secondary school we have a stern nurse who would do vaccinations and bandage a knee or two. Mental health didn't exist, outside of "the mental hospital."

Good old days.
