Take her to a free art gallery, however small.

Go somewhere inexpensive like The Works and buy a nice pencil, watercolour sets.

Comedycook · 22/10/2021 13:17

Some canvas boards, paints and brushes are very inexpensive at the Works.

Or a really nice grown up colouring book with pencils

Decent art paper.

What sort of art is she into?

Ricekrispie22 · 22/10/2021 16:55

An ArtBin storage box artdiscount.co.uk/products/artbin-essentials-xl-3-tray-bin

I’ve bought my dd (11) sketch pads and charcoal pencils from B&M before and she loved them. Also a tippex pen as she uses it for highlighting and black fine liner pens

Elieza · 24/10/2021 17:15

What kind of art does she do. Watercolour paint, oil paint, charcoal drawings, gouache, acrylic, pen, pencil, glass paint.

Lots of different types. If you could find out what she likes then you can get her something she would appreciate. No point in getting oil paints if she only does watercolours or whatever.

Aldi do oil, watercolour and acrylic paint sets, brush sets, canvasses and paper pads of various sizes. The difficulty is if you can get them if they are for sale soon.

They had t-shirt embroidery kits recently, candle making, soap making, mug painting etc kits too if it’s something arty-crafty she might like.

“Inexpensive” is subjective. What’s your budget?

Moonshine86 · 24/10/2021 17:31

Fymo modelling clay?

stopblowingyournose · 24/10/2021 17:32

We watched a YouTube vid on doing all sorts of art with permanent marker fine tip pens because you can put whatever you like over them and it won't smudge or rub.

I have an arty dd who is 12. She also enjoyed decoupage - lots of gear in hobbycraft

Elieza · 24/10/2021 17:38

That’s a good idea re clay.

And you can get one which is made of real silver particles which you mould into whatever shape you want like a pendant or ring, just like plasticine, melt it with a blowtorch or in the cooker or something, and what’s left is the pendant you created in pure silver.

Well cool. But you’d have to check the method to make sure it’s safe for her age.

Shrinking

You colour in the plastic sheets or draw yourself
Cut out
Put in oven to shrink
Cool
Make into keyring, jewellery, things to hang up

Similarly glass painting, but no need to use the oven

Shrinkies

Paint a wooden bird box or bug hotel & put in garden

PennyWus · 24/10/2021 18:16

I was given a calligraphy set at age 13 and loved creating beautiful inked designs

high quality pencils / pens etc are MUCH better than the cheap ones from TheWorks etc. If you can go to an independent art shop, get just a couple of pens & a nice pad of paper. Or a 'how to draw' book.

if your budget is bigger, a set of quality watercolour paints + watercolour paper would be good. sets can be £10 up to £50 and paper for £5 upwards. The paint is no good without the extra-thick paper.

Mocha1978 · 24/10/2021 19:32

My 11 yr old likes art, she really enjoyed some black paper and metallic markers she got for her birthday last yr, not too expensive at all, the Works do them. She also enjoys her watercolour pencil set from WH Smith, they come in a lovely tin.

LizBennet · 24/10/2021 19:35

I'd get her some polymer clay.
