What was in your childhood lunchbox?

Inspired by the 1980s lunchbox thread about the actual boxes... what did you have in them??

Mine was extremely consistent: sandwich, piece of fruit, carrot sticks and a ‘treat’ that varied but was always some kind of biscuit. My favourite were these things called Huggy Bears which was a little bag of biscuits with chocolate goo inside and bears stamped on the outside.

My lovely dad was in charge of lunch boxes and did this for me every day as well as a lunch for everyone else.

Mine was always boring and supermarket own brand everything. Own brand carton of orange/apple juice, cheese or ham on brown bread, ready salted own brand crisps. Occasionally a wagon wheel I think.

Used to look at my friend's Italian roll, capri sun and cartoonies with envy.

SpindelWhorl · 22/10/2021 07:32

I was lucky to get a single sandwich, with paste in, and one other small item.

My mother was a very complex woman around food.

Rubytinsleslippers · 22/10/2021 07:38

Does anyone remember ' sandwich fillers' was in a jar? Basically salad cream and orange coloured chunks? Or meat paste sandwich. Yoghurt and fruit. Also had a flask of weak juice which invariably leaked....

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 22/10/2021 07:41

Sandwich on white bread usually cheese or ham or the dreaded spread
Apple
Crisps
Penguin bar or club
Yogurt (until I convinced her I was never going to eat it warm because of sun)
Squash

This is pretty much her standard lunch for herself still substitute wholemeal bread. And she thinks it’s pretty healthy and doesn’t see that the sugar content is pretty high.

TheDogsMother · 22/10/2021 07:42

A brown bread sandwich of egg mayo or peanut butter, fruit, piece of cheese and the highlight chocolate biscuit. Either a Penguin, mint or Orange Club, Blue Ribband or Viscount.

Gufo · 22/10/2021 07:47

Sandwich spread or marmite on mighty white
Penguin
Crisps

I remember when I was 5 having a cold sausage and ketchup sandwich that my dad had made for me. Best tasting sandwich ever, even though I don't eat sausages these days!

Kanaloa · 22/10/2021 07:52

Sandwich with either jam or cheese on white bread. If it was cheese I would have mayo on it.
A bag of crisps, usually walkers ready salted.
Something like a wagon wheel, club, penguin.
An apple or satsuma.
A carton of Ribena or similar.

I remember my oldest sister once looking after me over the weekend and my parents weren’t home until Monday. She didn’t make me a packed lunch and brought me a happy meal from McDonald’s (where she worked) at lunch time.

Kanaloa · 22/10/2021 07:53

Love the cold ketchup and sausage sandwich 😂 the lunchbox police on mumsnet would be tearing their hair out by the chunk!

Equimum · 22/10/2021 08:10

Sandwich on white bread
Piece of fruit
Crisps
Chocolate biscuit - Penguin, Club
or similar.
Um Bongo carton

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 22/10/2021 08:17

My mum Fghhj it told off for making my lunches too interesting as the other kids were jealous 🤣

She used to do colour themes or shapes so I'd have Orange day with Red Leicester sandwiches cut into stars, a peeled satsuma, pack of Wotsits, carrot sticks, orange squash and so on

Do you mean sandwich spread? My in laws still buy this. I some times have it when there out of nostalgia. I don't know if you can actually get it in the uk anymore but there seems to be stocks of it still lurking about in other European countries 😆
ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 22/10/2021 08:23

I remember I begged my mum to cut my sandwiches with a cookie star cutter like Cher did in Mermaids. She said no. Devastated.

User00000000 · 22/10/2021 08:27

Jam or cheese spread sandwich, crisps, penguin biscuit, satsuma. Carton of orange juice.

Every. Single. Day.

Not surprisingly I was an overweight child

WitchyNameChange · 22/10/2021 08:29

Egg mayo or dairylea cheese triangle sandwich, and a peach or raspberry yoghurt. For some reason they didn't think I needed a drink!

Shouldbedoing · 22/10/2021 08:32

Cheese and pickle sandwich, an apple and possibly a penguin.

Mamette · 22/10/2021 08:33

I think a cheese sandwich, a satsuma.

Always a chocolate bar/ biscuit like a Telex or a 5-4-3-2-1.

billysboy · 22/10/2021 08:34

brown bread cheese and cucumber sandwiches which i grew to hate , always a slice of homemade cake and an apple which I loved
Never crisps
I still take my own sandwiches to work now and dont mind the odd cold sausage and ketchup on white on the odd occasion there is some
I dont get the fascination with refrigerated sandwiches from stores on a daily basis favoured by colleagues

MsMiaWallace · 22/10/2021 08:39

Nothing! My mum didn't have time for that!
I over compensate with DS's packed lunch.

TheSpiral · 22/10/2021 08:39

I used to have:
Sandwiches made from a kind of sliced white bread with bits in, not sure what it was, with sandwich spread (bleugh), potted meat, cheese, luncheon meat, or maybe chicken the day after a roast.
A Golden Delicious (bleugh) or Granny Smith
Happy Shopper “corn snacks” costing 5p a packet. Bleugh again.
A yogurt, often toffee flavour
A Happy Shopper chocolate biscuit or sometimes a Club!
Sometimes a cold sausage or chicken drumstick
Flask ,of weak squash

I wasn’t a massive fan but never thought to say to my Dad who did my lunches that, for example, I didn’t like sandwich spread so used to feed those to the seagulls. We didn’t have much money. Better off kids would have what I thought of as a “proper” packed lunch, which was usually ham sandwiches in white bread, Walkers or Golden Wonder crisps, Dairy Lea, a Penguin, an apple, and a Capri-Sun.

supercritter · 22/10/2021 08:44

Vegemite sandwich
Occasionally vegemite and lettuce

BlackeyedSusan · 22/10/2021 08:46

Sandwich (cheese, cheese and beetroot, dripping and salt,) apple. And a Tupperware beaker of weak squash.

HollysBush · 22/10/2021 08:52

White sliced sandwich, Shipmans chicken paste or Dairylee; Frazels or salt n vinegar Squares or Discos; Apple and Malt loaf spread thickly with margarine or sometimes a Club bar. Weak squash to drink.

AleynEivlys · 22/10/2021 09:09

Cheese and cucumber sandwich, Walkers Looney Tunes crisps (anyone remember those?!), carrot sticks, Blue Riband, flask of Vimto!

BrilliantBulb · 22/10/2021 09:09

I don’t really remember. I know I went through a phase of not eating sandwiches so was given cheese and crackers instead which I loved. And I remember the absolute delights of an orange club and me and my friends singing ‘If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, join our club!’

AleynEivlys · 22/10/2021 09:11

Oh also, if not cheese and cucumber, then Marmite sandwich. Yum! Going to go and have one of those now ...
