Is this normal after a kidney stone?

About three weeks ago I ended up in A&E in loads of pain and extreme UTI symptoms. They did a CT scan, said I'd had a kidney stone, sent me home with some painkillers. A few days later I ended up in A&E again as I hadn't stopped bleeding, so they gave me quite a hefty dose of antibiotics for a week (not sure why I wasn't given them the first time).

It's all over now but I feel like my kidney is occasionally still kind of reminding me it's there, if it makes any sense? I'm not in pain or anything, but it's sort of giving me an occasional dull ache or thud. Has something been left behind? Is it normal? Am I overthinking things? I've been making an effort to drink enough water, especially as I'm at home most of the time so no worrying about finding loos.

I’ve had kidney stones a few times & always get this after it’s passed for a while.

My consultant said it’s just irritation, a bit like when you’ve had grit in your eye but it still feels itchy/sore to blink.

Okay, thanks. Approx how long does it last for?

Anywhere from a couple of days to about 6 weeks. I almost felt internally bruised after my biggest ones.

You’re doing the right thing with lots of fluids & rest.

Have you actually passed the stone? Did you see a urologist/ have any follow up organised? I’d get to your GP if not.

Nobody mentioned anything about a follow-up appointment. Is that usually a standard thing?

If you didn't pass it and its quite big, they often give you treatment to break it up. It's like having an elastic band pinging on you back. You need to check.

When I had the CT scan, they said I'd already passed it. Nobody gave me any further treatment, just painkillers and antibiotics.

Should I make a GP appointment?

How did they know it had passed if it wasn't on the CT?

I had kidney stones the same time as you and have a CT next week - I have gone private but would've been referred by GP on NHS anyways if I hadn't.

Fwiw my kidney is aching a bit now and like I say, I had them about the same time as you. The pain was absolutely horrendous.

curdsandwhey · 21/10/2021 21:30

How did they know it had passed if it wasn't on the CT?

They told me the level of detail they can see on the scan. They said they could see a shape/hole where the stone originally was,. indicating that it had already left my kidney.

Wow interesting! My GP said they wouldn't be able to see anything if I'd passed the stone!

curdsandwhey · 21/10/2021 21:52

I'm very sure that's what they said. Mind you, I was in a load of pain and had been awake for hours and was under a lot of stress, so I hope I understood it correctly.

No I'm sure you did, I know what you mean re the pain - I felt like my kidney was trying to escape my body

curdsandwhey · 22/10/2021 09:14

So do you think I should try and make a GP appointment?

Still not sure what to do.
