Do your teenage daughters go to the same hairdresser as you and pay the same prices?!

My dd aged 14 needs a good haircut and blow dry but only something basic, no colour or styling. She is not particularly into fashion and just wears her hair to her shoulders and ties it back for school.

My local hairdressers are so pricey I just don’t think it’s worth paying the prices for what she needs done. The prices in the neighbouring city are even more. I think there should be mid-range prices for her age group not adult prices.

Where do your teenage daughters get their hair done and how much do you pay?

My hairdresser is is mobile so comes to my house and charges the same for my 14 and 15 year old daughters as I pay.
They do have a lot done- foils sometimes or all over bleach etc but costs the same as my hair. She only does cheaper haircuts for children if they’re under 12 I think it is.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2021 11:59

I cut dd's fringe and have trimmed the back for her a couple of times. She has had a dry cut a few times at the hairdresser and they don't charge as much for that. Her hair is long so she gets away with not getting it cut very often

Pinkflipflop85 · 21/10/2021 12:05

Why should it be cheaper for a teenager? Their hair isn't different to an adult woman.

A dry hair cut will be cheaper

BurntO · 21/10/2021 12:09

It takes just as long to do a teenagers hair than an adults hair. It is hair, doesn’t matter whose head it is on. It would be about £25 here

Brightmagic · 21/10/2021 12:09

Well that’s my point! She literally has it cut straight across and then dried. My hair takes much longer.

My hairdresser charges a lower price for my daughter, as I am an existing customer. I pay £25

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 21/10/2021 12:14

my 14 yo daughter pays adult prices. She has long hair, so it's not a complex cut, but she has THE MOST hair, and so even a trim and blow dry takes an age. On that basis I think it's ok for the full price to be charged.

The 11yo doesn't want a blowdry, and so I pay less for a wet cut.

ScamTheSchool · 21/10/2021 12:22

Ours is also full price at 14, and they have three grades of cost depending on how much hair you have.

EerilyDisembodied · 21/10/2021 12:25

Mine (15) has long straight hair so goes to one of those walk-in places for a dry cut every year or so. Costs about £20. She doesn't have any colour or need a blow dry, she prefers the quick in and out no faffing approach.

I go to a more expensive salon where I've been going since before she was born, mine needs a lot more styling and I like the whole take your time and have a drink and chat thing, so mine costs about £40 for a wet cut.

RB68 · 21/10/2021 12:28

sheesh where are you all 50 quid a head here and yes 16yr old charged same as me

VienneseWhirligig · 21/10/2021 12:30

My hairdresser charges £14 for a dry cut - I live locally so wash my hair just before I walk to the salon, it means my hair is still wet but it's classed as a dry cut. She doesn't blow dry it for me all the time (sometimes she will if she has a gap between clients). She would charge any over the age of 14 the same. It's £10 for under 14s. DS used to go there but now goes to the barbers next door, which is more expensive but also more specialised for the style he has.

DaisyNGO · 21/10/2021 12:35

@Brightmagic

A straight trim? Why don't you do it?

The style is the thing, not the age of the customer. 14 or 40 - actually I had more hair for them to cut at 14!

Littleducks · 21/10/2021 12:35

Yes pays the same which is reasonable in my opinion. There are tiers of pricing for dry cut /wet cut and for different lengths of hair. So I don't see why hairdresser should be paid less for clients age

Merlotthegreat · 21/10/2021 12:40

My 13 yr old dd has not yet had a blow dry at the hairdressers. Just a dry cut - we pay around £20.

LtJudyHopps · 21/10/2021 12:49

If I’m not having my hair coloured I have a wash and cut without blow dry can’t you ask for that? It’s cheaper than one with a blow dry.
Or as PP just a dry cut is even cheaper.

Brightmagic · 21/10/2021 12:57

Yes she could have a dry cut I suppose. I didn’t think of that and I haven’t seen it offered in my hairdressers.

I did trim it for her in lockdown and it was ok but it’s not quite the same.

I will be paying £35 for a cut and blow dry in a local out of town salon which I think is a lot.

My hair takes much longer as I have it layered and shaped at the front then straightened or curled at the end. Plus colour but I’m not counting that.

Brightmagic · 21/10/2021 12:59

I mean I’ll be paying £35 for her trim and blow dry.

Once we hit teenage years my mum found a mobile hairdresser to come to our house. This was obviously at least 10 years ago but I think she used to do a family of 4 for about £30. Nothing fancy but just a wash, cut and blow dry

Jumpingintochristmas · 21/10/2021 13:03

The blow dry/straighten still takes time. Our hairdresser is full price from age 13.

Couldhavebeenme3 · 21/10/2021 13:23

My teenage daughter and I both have thick, lower than shoulder length hair and we have a good cut/trim and blow dry, it costs the same.

If all she wanted was a straight cut and I was concerned about the cost, rather than the wash and blow dry 'experience' then she'd be getting a dry cut for half the price. In fact we both would.

But I like the time I spend getting my hair done (every 8-10 weeks) and it's the only beauty-type thing we do, so I pay for the service we get.

dameofdilemma · 21/10/2021 13:30

It really depends on the hairdresser.
Mine (well known chain, London) charges only £15 for dd's wash, cut and blow dry. They spend ages over it. She's aged 9 but it takes much longer to do her hair than mine, as her hair is longer and thicker. They must be making a loss doing it.

One of the hairdressers did imply that they only took child bookings for customers who had regular adult cuts themselves.
(Mine costs much, much more than £15!).

TumtumTree · 21/10/2021 13:31

DH cuts my 14yo DD's hair. So it's free Smile

nancy75 · 21/10/2021 13:34

I would be jumping for joy at 35 quid!
My Dd (16) recently had hers cut at a swankier hairdressers than I go to & it cost £85 (London obviously)

tricervixtops · 21/10/2021 14:16

Most places around here have a lower teen price and /or student discount. I have never paid full price for my teens.
