We are staying in Caernarfon on holiday next week and the weather forecast it’s looking fairly awful!
Does anyone have any suggestions for indoor activities and visits?? 4 kids to entertain from 2 - 11!

Once you've done the castle and Royal Welch Fusiliers museum, you've pretty well exhausted the place
.

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 20:51

You cant depend on decent weather so you have to go out in it. Its Wales after all!

Caernarfon is pretty grim. Apart from the castle, its got nothing. Unsure if its open as its being renovated.

There’s Yr Hwylfan -soft play in a church next to Asda.

You could drive to Glynllifon - 15 mins away for a woodland walk.

Dinas Dinlle is a nice beach.

Llanberis for the day.

Betws y Coed.

Llandudno is nice. Shops, promenade, chips, ice cream and the pier (if its open).

Portmeirion

Are you bringing bikes? Great cycle path in town.

Fron Goch garden centre is nice for a meal and a mooch round their very expensive shops. Unsure if their Christmas site is open.

Y Galeri cinema is good snd very reasonable, but you must book online.

Wetherspoons in town is ok for a cheap meal. The Black Boy inn is really nuce and full of history.

Bounce below

Electric mountain

Ionacat · 20/10/2021 21:09

As well as the things already mentioned - when we were there we did the Welsh Highland Railway and Anglesey Sea Zoo. The slate museum is also good.

Campalumpa · 20/10/2021 21:11

These are all outdoor, just put waterproofsnin

Dorothea Quarry - it’s like Angkor wat but in Wales

The Welsh highland railway

Rib boat ride on Menai straits

Beaches on lleyn peninsula

Abersoch

amillionmenonmars · 20/10/2021 21:16

Electric Mountain is closed.
Greenwood is good - but not for a rainy day.
Slate Museum Llanberis
Sea Zoo Anglesey
Penrhyn Castle and Plas Newydd National Trust properties have some good half term activities on

I can think of a dozen outdoor things, but it is tough when the weather is not on your side.

FlyingFlamingo · 20/10/2021 21:20

The National Slate Museum in Llanberis, and if it’s open the Quarry Hospital
Head over to Anglesey and go to the gaol and courthouse in Beaumaris, the castle is also worth a visit
The slate mines in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the copper mines in Beddgelert - if the day dries out later on/beforehand go and see Gelert and have an ice cream

Smartiepants79 · 20/10/2021 21:27

Thanks for this. A few things to look into.
We’ll definitely be going further afield than Caernarfon!
Anyone know of any good swimming places in the surrounding areas?
What about parks?

OP posts:
MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 21:32

Rhyl has a new swimming centre. Not sure of the name but its very new

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 21:33

Llanddwyn beach is worth a visit (on Anglesey)

Cactus1982 · 20/10/2021 21:43

I’m wondering why the hell anyone would want to on holiday Caernarfon? My late grandfather was from there and my Dad has always said it’s a shithole full of the rudest people he’s ever met. ‘Ignorant bastards’ he called them to be exact. Avoid like the plague.

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 22:13

As a place to sleep, its ok. Its a place that needs sprucing up and definitely has weird people but every where has that!

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2021 22:14

Where are you staying OP?

GogCymraeg · 20/10/2021 22:17

Your dad sounds like a lovely man @Cactus1982 Hmm

Because the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom. I've always found the people in North Wales to be very friendly. I suspect the problem does not lie with them.

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/10/2021 23:24

Take waterproofs

safariboot · 21/10/2021 00:08

Get the bus or drive through the Llanberis Pass. Utterly spectacular landscape.

Welsh Highland Railway if you can afford it. The price has shot up since I went on it in the 2000s.

And, you know, you're in Wales. You can't wait for dry weather. Get the coats on and the brollies up and go out.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 26/07/2022 11:31

I know this is old but I am bumping so as not to start a new thread.

We are going to Caernarfon tomorrow for 3 nights. Staying at the black boy.

We've visited before but never stayed. Is there any nightlife....?

MrsDThomas · 26/07/2022 17:02

Zero

unless you’re 17 where you can go to Levels (if its open that is)

the Black is the best place to be. Enjoy the history if the place. Id rather stay and eat and drink there than anywhere else. No where else is worth going to!

Smartiepants79 · 26/07/2022 21:48

From what I saw of it, I’d suggest probably not much that you’d want to be involved in!
We had a lovely holiday but Caernarfon town itself was a bit of a rundown mess. There’s probably a couple of restaurants and pubs that might be worth a visit but not much else I reckon!

Is Levels underneath Copa? Slightly older than 17 but have no problem with sweaty nightclubs!

That bad? Eek. We were last there 2 years ago and it seemed typical of lots of towns in that parts were rundown/empty shops etc.
