If I show you my prescription would I benefit from contact lenses?

I have prescription glasses and sunglasses but for going out and think it would be really nice to just be able to see without worrying about loosing my glasses. Or nipping out somewhere like the school run and not having to wear glasses.

But I do work on a lap top as a job and my vision is that I only struggle long distance (and only one eye is bad really).

Any advise appreciated.

If I show you my prescription would I benefit from contact lenses?

I can't tell from your prescription, but it would be well worth you discussing it with an optician. They can look at the options, will give your eyes a thorough physical check - they all offer "trials" of lenses, so you aren't committed to a huge expense. I had to try a couple of different varieties/sizes before I found ones that were comfortable - there's quite a variation.

From my own experience, lenses and a lot of screenwork aren't always a match made in heaven. I stick to glasses Mon-Fri.

I think I'll book at appointment and see then. I didn't think about just wearing them at weekends for eg. That would probably be what I want. Thanks

I have daily ones - a pack of 30 lasts me ages! I just wear at the weekends, or if I'm going out in the evening. Chuck in the bin afterwards - no cleaning or storing needed.

Grin at one eye being really bad at -1.25!

You’d need to speak to your optician but ‘most’ people can wear lenses, you just have to find the right ones. I wear mine 12-15 hours everyday and work in front of a computer for most of it with no issues.

mrsdavegrohl · 20/10/2021 16:15

My good eye is -3.25!
Most people can wear contacts, you'd need to see your optician and have a proper fitting, the prescription for lenses can be different from glasses too. Once you get them fitted and are getting on fine with them you can order from any where. I use daysoft daily disposables.

Crocky · 20/10/2021 16:17

My good eye is -6 😂
If my eyesight was as good as yours I don’t think I would much bother with glasses.

itsgettingwierd · 20/10/2021 16:24

My good eye is -1.00 - 2.25! (That's myopia and astigmatism in that order!)

My bad one is -1, -2.50!

I cannot manage contacts as my astigmatism is really bad and the blasted things won't stay put! Even the specific astigmatism ones 🙄

You need to discuss with an optician.

Pascha · 20/10/2021 16:34

My eyes are 6.75 and 7.50 respectively, with a medium size astigmatism. I use contacts for sports and activities with the kids so a pck of 30 lasts me about 4-6 months as I only use a couple a week if that. I spent years struggling because of the astigmatism and finally I have found a brand that dont cause me issues.

Wildflowers2020 · 20/10/2021 17:14

Your age will be a factor here. If you are late 30’s/early 40’s then your near vision will be more comfortable without any correction. Contact lenses will cause more eye strain when using your laptop. If you are younger it will not have as much impact on near vision tasks

Orangecrisp · 20/10/2021 17:21

My prescription is a -10 in both eyes. I wear contact lenses as I struggle with glasses being far away from my eye. I can see much better in them than I can in glasses and the prescription I wear in the lenses is lower for this reason.I wouldn’t bother with the -0.25 eye at all, maybe just buy some disposables for the other eye but I think you would need an optician to advise as the strength you need would probably be less than that prescription for the contact lenses.

ElephantBetta · 20/10/2021 20:20

Wow some of you are so blind! -10?!? I'll give them a call tomorrow and get booked in. It's just the one eye that it's noticeable but it drives me mad when I'm driving or in a bar for example. Thanks for the advise.

OP, what you said about some of your respondents being ‘really blind’ is actually really rude. I’m sure you didn’t intend that. There’s a great variety of prescriptions out there. Some of us are very shortsighted, others less so. I agree though, you should discuss the matter with an optician.

Wow, that's really rude.

I've worn glasses and/or lenses since I was seven due to genetic short-sightedness - I have an astigmatism in one eye and my 'bad eye' is -7. I wear glasses or contact lenses to correct my distance vision , and reading glasses on top of contacts to sharpen up my near vision at a laptop or similar.

Would you 'wow!' at a person with dark or near-dark blindness, or is your derision saved for people who are a bit fuzzy round the edges?

Anyway, you're short-sighted too, deal with it.

ElephantBetta · 20/10/2021 21:23

Didn't mean to be rude, I just didn't realise it went as far as -10. I meant the wow as in, I think I've got it bad. Sorry if I've upset anyone.

It did come across as a bit rude! I'm -7.0 in both eyes with a terrible astigmatism in my left.

I've heard of people with prescriptions as strong as -30.00 and they need to get their glasses made in abroad.

To answer your question, speak to your optician. I wore daily contacts for ten years (before lockdown and wfh) and they are very freeing.

UnholyStramash · 20/10/2021 21:41

I see I addressed my comment to the wrong person. Sorry about the confusion. As I said, I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be rude. @ElephantBetta, I can tell you those of us with over 10 either way do gets lots of comments from people who should know better, like people working at the optician’s for example. Shock Often very loudly.

EileenGC · 20/10/2021 21:45

I'm -7.0 and -7.5, started to grow when I was 5 according to my charts. I don't remember ever seeing properly Grin I wear glasses at home when sat in front of the laptop (don't work with screens outside the home). I've been wearing lenses since the age of 15 and it takes a while to get used to them and to find the right ones but they're amazing and especially practical with masks!

Mine say the ideal daily wear is 6-8 hours but I often have them on for 12-14h a day. I get monthly ones and they're amazing quality, but you do have to be super careful not to drop them or scratch them on day 2 of 30, because they're not cheap!

It goes way further than -10
daisypond · 20/10/2021 21:51

Your eyes aren’t bad at all. They’re really good. My prescription is around minus-5. I used to wear contact lenses but stopped quite a long time ago and now only wear glasses. You could get lenses, though, I’m sure. Ask your optician.
