Talk to me about ovens!

Our old, inherited oven has died tonight Sad

I've never actually bought an oven before so can anyone recommend theirs? Built in single oven, would like 2 shelves included as I've seen reviews for some that only come with 1 shelf.

Budget £500ish. Is pyrolytic worth it? Any makes to avoid? I do a fair bit of cooking and baking so needs to be able to cope with that!

Appreciate any and all advice Smile

Definitely get pyrolytic! It is a complete game changer.

I have a bosch pyro. Not the top top model (which I had previously) but upper mid range. Serie 6 I think. Its fantastic.

Rather than a thermostat that most cheaper ovens have which will just turn the heat off on or when it reaches the set temperature, it has a lambda type sensor that predicts when the set temperature will be reached and adjusts the heat level accordingly. This gives you a much more stable heat curve and better baking performance.

Mines about 600 on ao right now.

Whatever brand you get, def get pyro though. I 'cleaned' mine yesterday which was pretty grotty and greased up. 2 hours later all I had to do was wipe out the loose grey ash with a damp cloth and give the glass a polish.

We have two AEG pyrolytic ovens with grills that were just under £500 each about 5 years ago, but unfortunately prices seem to have risen a lot since then. They are excellent.

We had to replace one of them a year or two ago due to a grill fire that spread to the control panel and I got a graded one from ebay for £280, but it seems like even those have doubled in price since then. I got it from Kingdom Appliances and it said there was a dent on the front hence the cheap price, but I can't see anything.

They do have a few similar ones but are slightly above your budget

Budget is flexible if necessary!

Thanks @skipperjonce I'm actually looking at a Bosch pyrolytic at the minute, but a series 4 one with a 5 year warranty that's currently about £600. Maybe prices have risen! We have a Bosch dishwasher and washing machine that I'm very happy with so gravitated towards the brand again.

I've just bought two John Lewis own brand ovens. Which best buy rated, telescopic runners, and pyrolytic cleaning. 3 year guarantee. I paid £599 3 weeks ago, but it looks like they've put the price up.

HappydaysArehere · 20/10/2021 10:30

Yes definitely a pyro. No intense labour or nasty chemicals. I have a Neff. Love it.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 20/10/2021 10:55

Another vote for NEFF.

I have one and it's brilliant. Loads of different settings and SELF CLEANING (didn't know it was called pyrolytic - learn something new every day!).

Tinkles78 · 20/10/2021 12:09

We're in NI and unfortunately John Lewis won't deliver here which is annoying, but an argument for another day Hmm

I looked at Neff but they seemed more expensive, and I think Neff/Bosch/Siemens are all basically the same anyway at different price points aren't they?

Thanks for confirming pyro is worth the extra! Definitely excited about not having to scrub the oven in future!

Do people think it's worth getting an under-counter oven with a separate grill? I have to replace one for a family member shortly, and I'm wondering how people cope with only being able to bake or grill, not both at the same time (ie how do you grill a chop and cook oven chips at the same time?

I did as I do use the grill quite often... I bought a double under counter oven from smeg and it's great

The grill is at the top and is also a handy warming area too

You just need to buy a special under counter double oven cupboard to house it in... my kitchen is IKEA but I got the cupboard from b and q

BarbaraofSeville · 20/10/2021 12:18

We have 2 single ovens both with grill for that purpose.

Also useful for Christmas and parties when you want to cook a few things at once.

Thank you!

LesLavandes · 20/10/2021 12:58

I have a Neff pyro. The self cleaning is amazing

Good luck finding an oven that's actually in stock! Buying one myself and it's a case of what's available not, what do I want!
