My wee smells before my period

I’ve only noticed it for about the last couple of years. I’m late 30’s and have had hellish periods since my youngest was born 5 years ago - iron infusions due to the amount of blood I’m losing, vomiting from pain and not being able to stand up straight or climb upstairs for the first three days of my period. I’ve been to the doctor but because I won’t consider having a coil fitted 🙄.

Has anyone else had this? I bought some of the urine strips that show up any abnormalities but everything was within normal range. I’m guessing it’s just a hormonal thing but is it worth speaking to the GP about? I haven’t had unprotected sex so not an STD. My GP already thinks I’m a pita because I won’t get a coil fitted so I’m reluctant to call them unless I need to. I can’t find much info online about change in urine smells before period and just trying to find out if anyone else has it.

I’m not a wee/ poo/ period troll btw, I’ve been here for years.

Although that would be something a troll would say, I guess. I’m not though. Honest.

Does your wee smell more or does your sense of smell improve?

ChatterMonkey · 19/10/2021 19:19

What sort of smell? Are you defo drinking enough? Could be that just before your period your sense of smell is slightly stronger and you are noticing strong smell due to dehydration a bit more?

Sometimes i notice my wee smelling but normally when ive not been drinking enough.

This is how I knew I was pregnant twice.
So must be a hormonal thing.

PissyMum · 19/10/2021 19:22

palavah I wish I could but there’s only one surgery in my town and I can’t change.

I don’t think it’s my sense of smell getting stronger. The wee doesn’t smell bad but it doesn’t smell of wee either, if that makes sense. I don’t know how to describe it, it’s just different. Reassuring to know that other women have had this too though.

I have noticed this and I have the same sort of history with heavy periods. I wonder if it's hormonal.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 19/10/2021 20:07

It's a reliable indicator that my period will start the next day.

vomiting from pain and not being able to stand up straight or climb upstairs for the first three days of my period.
This plus heightened sense of smell is what I had when I was diagnosed with endometriosis & ovarian cysts. I personally think you should request a scan or referral.

PissyMum · 20/10/2021 03:24

scamtheschool my GP is point blank refusing to refer me to anyone unless I try getting a coil fitted first. I previously had the contraceptive implant about 7 years ago and it left me suicidal and suffering from psychosis. I begged for it to be removed but was told I needed to give it at least 3 months for it to settle down. In the end they removed it when I turned up to A&E with a Stanley knife and said that I would sit there and cut it out myself if no one else would help me (I was suffering from psychosis at the time). After that I refuse to get anything like that put into me that I can’t physically remove myself as I just don’t trust the GP when they say they’ll arrange for it to be removed if it doesn’t help.

I don’t know what else I can do. The GP’s at my surgery just read my notes and say “I think we should do what Dr X says” as he’s my actual GP and he owns the practice with his wife who also works there. I’m not entitled to apply to any other GP surgeries as the one in my town is the only one in my area. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do really.

I would start by writing a letter and sending it recorded delivery. Keep proof of postage or email it or whatever the way is to do that these days.
Set out everything you said here, symptoms etc, including your reasons for not wanting the coil, what happened last time.

I would call another doctors surgery (or 111?) and say you're not looking to switch doctors as such, but you'd like a second opinion.
Or you'll have to get someone to take you to A&E next time you have your period. Maybe unethical, but if your GP won't listen...
