and I am freaking out!

It's been over 5 years since my last interview. My stomach is churning. I'm so worried I'm going to make an absolute tit of myself.

Someone tell me to get a grip!

You got this. You are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.

Some deep breaths and visualise you being confident, answering the questions well and being successful!

Egghead68 · 19/10/2021 11:24

Prepare answers and examples and then just smile, do you best and remember it will be over quickly. The worst that can happen is that you don’t get the job, which you don’t have at the moment anyhow.

Good luck!

Congratulations OP!

One of my friends has a very successful consultancy that teaches businesses how to win pitches. He said that, regardless of what someone is offering and its value, winning a pitch almost always comes down to "Can I work well with this person?", basically - are you their sort of person?

If you've got to interview stage, you've obviously got the skill set they need, so the interview IME is more a chance to meet you and just see what you're like. I know interview questions can seem tough, but it's really just a mechanism to get a dialogue going.

And don't worry about nerves - again IME it's actually quite hard to tell if someone is nervous. I'm often surprised when someone tells me they are/were in a situation, as I had know idea. If you're worried about it though try some breathing exercises beforehand.

Finally, and most importantly, try and look your very best - as groomed and appropriate as possible.

Good luck!

Not where I work. Your answers are scored so what you say in the interview most definitely counts.

I think it went OK. My nerves did get the better of me and I didn't answer some questions as well as I could have unfortunately.

Well done for getting through it. Hope you were able to treat yourself afterwards.

GreenTeaPingPong · 20/10/2021 23:22

In my experience - and I've had several job interviews in recent years - whether or not you get the job really depends on what the other candidates are like. You can be as confident and well groomed as you like, but if another candidate has experience of that exact role in a similar organisation and you don't, then they'll get it. In other words, do your best, practise your answers, etc., but whether you get it or not is largely out of your hands. Good luck!

Thanks :)

The job advertised (basic position I have a lot of experience in) didn't line up with what they were actually looking for (higher up position with a slightly different set of skills to what I have) so that threw me. Most of the questions asked were ones I was not prepared for. The interview lasted over an hour so maybe they thought I was alright.

It would be nice to get it but I won't be distraught if I don't. It's the type of job I think I can do but maybe I'm not ready for it yet.

See what happens.

It’s all good as you will be less nervous for the next interview now.

Fired · 25/10/2021 18:28

I got the job!

Wow OP. Is this the more senior role too? Congrats!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 25/10/2021 18:51

@Fired, congratulations, that's excellent news! 😃🎉🏆🌟🍾🥂
When do you start?

Fired · 25/10/2021 18:57

Thank you! Yes, it's the more senior role. Am so surprised! I don't start until November so I have a week or so to calm these nerves. Phew.

Would never have quit my previous job and applied for this one if it wasn't for MN.

Congratulations!!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Well done!!!!!

Fired · 26/10/2021 17:01

Can anyone help me word an email reply?

My job offer states I'll start 8th November. In the most recent reply to my email accepting the job, the sender says "I will see you next Monday" which is the 1st November. Would it be rude to ask for clarification or if next week is for training of some sort and my official start date is the 8th?

Hi Manager,

Could you clear up a confusion for me please. My job offer email dated xxxxxx says my start date is 8/11/21 but in your email dated xxxxx you mention 1/11/21.

Best wishes

Fired

viques · 26/10/2021 17:19

On reflection, I would call, not email.

Fired · 26/10/2021 17:32

Thank you Viques!
