Does this look like fleas?

We’ve just moved into a new house, previous owner had cats.

Does this look like flea bites? We’ve been here a week tomorrow, only affecting one out of five of us Confused

If it is fleas, what should we do?! Never had an animal so have no idea!

(PS he has these ‘bites’ on his arms as well as ankles and wrists. Not sure if that makes a difference)

Does this look like fleas?

Ankles are a common place for flea bites
Maybe try Indorex spray for the house

Bobsyer · 18/10/2021 15:52

Ta I'll give that a go. Odd though that only one person is affected!

Hoover lots. The eggs fall off the animal into carpets, skirting any crack in laminate.
We got rid of them by hoovering twice a day and spraying all the skirtings/ soft furnishings, oh and treating the cat!

As a children we had a cat and suffered flea bites as in your photo. But our father denied there were any fleas (he didn't seem to get bitten) so my brother would try and catch them and put them in his bed when he did! They still didn't seem to bite him, but perhaps some people react to the bites and others don't?

eddiemairswife · 18/10/2021 16:07

My older daughter used to get bitten; none of the rest of us were affected. On her YR Open Evening we read in her 'news'." I have got flea bites on my legs."

onthinice · 18/10/2021 16:08

Is he the only one who plays on the floor? Ankles are common and wrists and arms could be too if they're in the carpet and he's lying down to play.

The only thing that ever got rid of fleas when I had an issue was a powder that began with D that you sprinkle down and it cuts the fleas to peices. Even paying an exterminator to spray the house did not work. If you don't like your carpets and plan to change them, rip them up now.

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 18/10/2021 16:18

You can get smoke bombs from pets at home for the rooms x

Weepingwillows12 · 18/10/2021 16:20

I think it's something to do with different people react differently to the bites. I always get bitten but my DH never does. I think I just react to them and he doesnt so he doesn't know he's been bitten. Bit like an allergy. I also read something about some people being more attractive to fleas but no clue why.

If it's an infestation you need proper treatment from the vet.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2021 16:22

OP doesn't have pets so would just be treating the house. Indorex spray is supposed to be good for that

TheDivineOddity · 18/10/2021 16:30

Had exactly the same thing when we moved into a house many years ago where the previous owner had cats and we didn't, after a few days we started getting flea bites in our lower legs. I sympathise as it was awful.
We solved the problem by buying spray cans of flea killer (sorry too long ago to remember the brand) and wearing face masks we sprayed every carpet, curtain, soft furnishing and every single nook and cranny in every room, everywhere.
We started at the top and worked our way down to the front door. We then shut the house up for quite a few hours and hoovered everywhere when we returned.
It solved the problem immediately and we weren't troubled by flea bites again.

No he’s nearly 13 so mainly confined to sofa and bed! I think he must just be the unlucky one that they like.

I will get the hoover out and some Indorex, I don’t really want to pull up the carpets or bomb the house just yet. I’ll try that first.

Indorex works a million times better than flea bombs in my experience. Spray all carpets and soft furnishings and then air the room because it stinks.

Frlrlrubert · 18/10/2021 18:32

I'm always the one that gets bitten if there are fleas anywhere. Indoorex will sort it out. It was the only thing I've found that actually worked. We had to do it twice when the dogs had them and the treatment wasn't working on them, but with no pets once should be enough.

MerryMarigold · 18/10/2021 18:34

Hopefully not bed bugs. Did you inherit any furniture? Do a flea bomb in his bedroom in case the cats were mainly in there.

Wtfdoipick · 18/10/2021 18:37

Indorex is a lifesaver, highly recommend it.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 18/10/2021 18:46

Yes, get Indorex it's way better than the flea bombs. Make sure that you spray right along the edges by the skirting boards.

You can see how bad the infestation is by putting a candle in the middle of a dish or warm water with a bit of washing up liquid in. They're attracted by the warmth and the washing up liquid breaks the surface tension of the water so that they drown.

KILNAMATRA · 18/10/2021 19:00

Diatomaceous earth.. does bed bugs and fleas and is non toxic.. wear a mask, it’s dusty

Bobsyer · 19/10/2021 21:56

Thanks all.

Pretty sure it’s not bedbugs, no furniture left in the house and I have looked and haven’t seen anything that looks like a bedbug.

I’ll get husband to pick up Indorex tomorrow as didn’t manage to get out today.
