When holding a kids party do you always pay to get a cake made?
If yes do you go with a theme?
Just pricing up & there quoting around £100 for a medium size !!
Assume this is the norm?

Some people do.
Some people make their own
Some get supermarket.

I've seen all three. I make my own. They aren't perfect, but the kids just want cake.

BendingSpoons · 18/10/2021 13:26

I buy from the supermarket or sometimes make my own. They are young enough they don't notice the difference.

Some people pay £110 to have a replica of their dog 😂

Just do whatever works best for you/what you can afford! Smile

Personally, supermarket.

Personalised can look great, and I think the money is fair considering the time that goes into making it. However, supermarket ones also look and taste good for a fraction of the price.

I always made mine and you can buy amazing cake toppers on eBay, themed ones, ie 8 inch disc of printed icing that you stick on top of a fondant cake.

There are plenty of incredibly easy videos to follow on YouTube of easy cake decorating.

You can buy a ready made cake and just add and embellish it. My children are now mid to late teens so I have had a lot of practice.

I think paying £100 for a cake is a lot.

supermarket for us as well
M&S do nice personalised cakes which might be a good middle ground?

MeredithMae · 18/10/2021 13:43

One of my most genius decisions ever was to make Colin the Caterpillar 'our tradition' for birthday!!! DS is 11 and still loves it when it comes out!

LagneyandCasey · 18/10/2021 13:45

Mostly homemade and sometimes supermarket. We've had many Colins over the years.

I don't see the point in spending a fortune. It just gets cut up and eaten. I swear it's mainly for social media photos.

ILiedAboutBeingTheOutdoorType · 18/10/2021 13:49

I paid for a special cake for DD's first birthday. Nowhere near £100 though. I've made a couple but am not a great baker so most have come from supermarket.

almaonao · 18/10/2021 13:50

I make my own as my mum did ours for about the first ten years.

This year was the first one and I made a number one cake teletubbie them. It was a bit shit but my baby and husband loved it Grin

I also made her a pink smash cake which was pretty good.
They both tasted delicious!

PetrifriedPumpkin · 18/10/2021 13:50

No, I always make one. Can't afford £100 on a cake!
I usually get a small Lego/playmobil or special candles etc to decorate the cake along the theme of the party. Wash thoroughly before using, and they're part of child's present.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/10/2021 13:51

I sometimes made cakes, and sometimes bought them, depending on how inspired I was feeling. My best were pizza cakes - single layer of sponge, red icing, grated yellow fondant for the cheese, then ham, peppers and mushrooms made out of fondant, candied pineapple, and desiccated coconut dyed green for the herbs.

mogtheexcellent · 18/10/2021 13:53

I make all ours but if you cant cook/ too busy/ cant be arsed then shop or professional cakes are fine. Most parents round here do costco cakes. Kids don't care tbh.
