I started a job around 2 weeks ago which is completely unrelated to my degree (so I have no prior experience).
On my first day one of the juniors, over a teams call, very quickly and briefly ran through mutiple things which we would be tasked on over the next few months. IMO it was run through with the expectation that we knew (by we I mean me and the other new starter) the systems. The call included A LOT of new information, systems, processes, websites, terminology etc that I've never heard of or used before so I came away unserstanding bits and pieces here and there, but admittedly not a lot.
Following this there has been an expectation that I will be able to get on with the work. Some bits (the more simpler I should say) have been fine and me and the other new starter have been able to work these out between us (or ask another team member to run through them).
Last week I was then set a complex task, one in which was briefly covered on my initial day (but which I found confusing and had forgotten large parts, as well as probably 50% of it which hadn't been covered). I was called by the team member who said they were going to drop me in it and to ask questions if I needed help. The problem was, I had no idea how to even get started, as in how to even access the files (we hadn't been shown this). As soon as I ask questions, I get hit with 'forgoodness sake AfterEight or 'did you not think to take notes' (I couldn't possibly of taken notes, it was run through far too fast - I told him this and then got 'well you should of told me to slow down'. I managed to speak to another team member who kindly talked through most of it with me (but again, it will definately take me more than twice running through it to remember the lot). I then had to hand it back to the junior who had set me the work, who again proceeded to say 'forgoodnes sake AfterEight' on each part I'd missed out (because I wasn't shown what to do). He then proceeded to tell me something along the lines of 'if you are struggling to do it after being shown it we are going to presume you're not retaining anything' (aka I'm not listening, which I absolutely am).
I'm not sure whether, this being my first professional job, I'm expecting too much, or whether others would consider this inadequate? I feel like I've been half-assed explained a few things and then told get on with it. I don't mind being dropped in the deep end, but how am I meant to complete a task in its entiretly where bits I've never been shown before? This morning, by the same person, I've been moaned at because I'm not familiar with keyboard shortcuts (it takes me a few seconds longer to click on things). When were going through things, he'll also ask me to cick on XYZ which takes me a while to find as I'm trying to look through all the files for it. Again I get moaned at because it taken me a minute to locate it (ofc he is quicker, he's been there for 3 years so he knows where they are).
It's just making me feel like I'm absolutely useless.
