IKEA Meatballs - are there any similar at supermarkets?

We’ve just finished our last packet of IKEA (frozen) meatballs. Our nearest store is 48 miles away and it’s a bit far to go there!

I’ve attempted to make my own but they are nothing like IKEA’s :(

Does anyone know if there is a similar tasting product at one of the major supermarket stores? (Preferably all year round, unlike the seasonal offerings from Aldi/Lidl etc.).

We've had to resort to getting the frozen ones from Food Warehouse/Iceland. Tesco used to do some nice Swedish meatballs in the chill but haven't seen them for ages locally

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 17/10/2021 18:56

I find the iceland swedish meatball a good alternative, but they are slightly salty

That's the ones we buy too

Scan meatballs were the closest and are a very common brand in Sweden, but I can’t find them anywhere any more. Sainsburys, Morrisons and Costco sell Smörgåsbord meatballs, which are good.

Scottishskifun · 17/10/2021 19:05

Farm foods bizarrely! They are actually pretty good and cook from frozen easily!

Newnormal99 · 17/10/2021 19:06

I get the iceland ones. They are a little smaller I think.

Phyllis321 · 17/10/2021 19:08

Sainsbury’s have a brand called Scana or Scania which are very similar.

Phyllis321 · 17/10/2021 19:09

Sorry, brand is Smorgasbord.

Tempusfudgeit · 17/10/2021 19:15

These from Morrisons, taste exactly like the IKEA ones. With peas, mash and gravy but hold the jam Smile

Mixing evaporated milk and beef stock (Oxo) makes a good sauce for meatballs.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 17/10/2021 19:18

Oh gosh I have a craving for IKEA meatballs and the cream sauce now....

AnyFucker · 17/10/2021 19:21

I like the Morrison’s ones. V. good.

dementedpixie · 17/10/2021 19:58

The Morrison's ones look to be the same as the Iceland ones but in a different sized bag

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 17/10/2021 20:01

When you made your own did you use the actual IKEA recipe?

Teesdale2622 · 17/10/2021 20:05

I second the Asda link above

Porkchops22 · 17/10/2021 20:23

Farmfoods

25yearsnhsworker · 17/10/2021 20:26

Yes we have had them from Morrisons frozen.
Asda in the fridge near fresh meats and tesco. Kids love them, we have ikea 5 mins away but sometimes easier to get at supermarket.

Blaziken · 17/10/2021 20:31

I'm so glad I saw this! I wanted gluten free IKEA meatballs for my DD and some of the supermarket ones are!

That's so good, they make such an easy mid week tea with pasta and veg.
fruckkkit · 18/10/2021 13:29

Veggie here - the Birds Eye Green Cuisine ones are pretty similar and meat free, just in case anyone's interested! I make the Ikea sauce from the recipe they published at the start of the pandemic and its so good, freezes well as well

WhiskyXray · 18/10/2021 13:32

Recommend the Smorgasbord ones they sell at Sainburys etc. Our family come to blows over them when it comes to fighting the food up.

WhiskyXray · 18/10/2021 13:34

divvying the food up*

Autocorrect is a belligerent as my kids, it seems.

Thank you, everyone! I’m lucky in that I have a wide range of supermarkets to choose from (with the exception of Farm Foods) so I will definitely try some of the meatballs from the stores listed above.

We usually have ours with spaghetti and Lloyd Grossman’s tomato and basil sauce, but I’ve just found a jar of IKEA Lingonberry jam which is expiring soon so I will cook up some meatballs Swedish style with mashed potatoes. Someone posted that they make a gravy with evaporated milk and Oxo…not sure about that! I had no idea that there is/was an IKEA gravy recipe! Off to look at their website now and hope it’s there!
