Phenergan for fear of flying

GorgeousGoldies · 17/10/2021 15:38

I’ve just bought a packet of Phenergan on the advice of the pharmacist, for an upcoming flight. I usually take Diazepam but have left it too late to get any.

Has anyone ever taken this before, and any advice for timing it and how you felt (and if you had a gin with it?) Thanks.

I take it to help with occasional sleep issues. I take two pills 40 minutes before lights out. I don't suffer any hang over effects after wars but it does make you drowsy.

userxx · 17/10/2021 15:42

Isn't that what was given to children in the 70's ? Sure my mum used to give it to me, said i'd be out like a light for hours!

Katyy · 17/10/2021 15:45

Try it at home first I find it very strong. If I take 5mg it knocks me out for at least 8 hours. Good luck

I'm very groggy the next day to the point of being non functional.

Biscoffee · 17/10/2021 16:19

I’ve no idea what phenergan does to a person but in the event of an emergency would you really want to be incapable of helping yourself survive an emergency landing force. Is it really fair on those around you either to be hampered in their attempt to get off an aircraft if you (and others) are knocked out by medication

This is a genuine question from a frequent flyer and the mother and mother in law of flight deck and cabin crew. I really don’t want loved ones burnt to a cinder trying to get people who are drunk or drugged off an aircraft.

Biscoffee · 17/10/2021 16:20

Sorry, for eg. Not force

GorgeousGoldies · 17/10/2021 16:25

Thanks so much for your responses. I think I’m going to take one the night before and hope I still feel the effects in the morning.

Biscoffee I completely take you point. With diazepam I can feel really relaxed but could snap out of it straight away if necessary. I’m not sure with this medication, so won’t risk it on the morning of the flight.

I use it for flying!!! Or at least I used to before children.
Depending on the length of flight depends on how many I take - short flight is half, 8 hour plus if overnight I take 2
I wouldn't advise drinking with it

Have a practice before you go - I also used phenergan when I was pregnant as anti sickness medication

Biscoffee · 17/10/2021 18:35

Gorgeous, I realized I sounded extremely critical in my reply to you and I just want to apologize for it and explain I used to be terrified of flying and wouldn’t even go to the loo unless I couldn’t avoid it. It meant not even drinking water before I went on board and once on board. I was a terrible example to my children. What cured me was having children who flew for a living and I’d listen to them chatting about work , they never seemed worried before flight. It’s was routine for them. One day my son in law said to me I’m going on a Milan flight, come with me and we’ll do something about your fear of flying. So I did, and then I also made a few flights with other members of my family and they’d tell me what each noise meant etc. Now I have no fear at all and I actually love flying. Is it possible for you to do one of those fear of flying courses in time for your next holiday. I think it would help you a lot.

GorgeousGoldies · 17/10/2021 18:48

Biscoffee thank you, that’s really great advice and does actually make me feel a bit better! I did understand where you were coming from with your first post though. I’m embarrassed to say I do have children, so don’t want to pass on my fear nor be so useless I couldn’t help them if necessary.

@CCSS15 thank you too! Sorry to be a pain but could you please break down exactly what your plan would be for a 3 hour flight (times and amounts!)

God are they still producing that, I was prescribed that as a child for car sickness.
No help at all op sorry .

CovidCorvid · 17/10/2021 19:01

I’ve taken it for sleeping when I’m working night shifts. Afaik it doesn’t help with relaxing you or anxiety like diazepam does. Just will either make you feel really groggy /send you to sleep. Guess if you’re asleep you won’t be anxious but you need to be awake for boarding so would still be anxious. Takes about 30 mins to work for me.

CovidCorvid · 17/10/2021 19:02

Be aware it comes in different strengths…so the people saying they take half could be talking about a different dose from what you have.

FrankiesKnuckle · 17/10/2021 19:09

It's a mildly sedating anti histamine, it will not leave you incapable or unrousable.

TSSDNCOP · 17/10/2021 19:11

Mums used to give that out in the 70's especially if they'd ordered a babysitter.

You won't feel a thing OP. I personally think a nice epidural should be available on flights with less legroom.

LizzieSiddal · 17/10/2021 19:22

I know this is too late for your up and coming journey but I’d highly recommend a fear of flying course. My dh was absolutely petrified of flying which meant we actually didn’t fly for 20 years! He went on the BA course at Heathrow and it completely cured him. There were about 80 people on the course and all of them apart from one went on the short flight at the end of the course. They really do work!
We have been able to fly without any issues, including a 17 hour flight to Perth, Australia.

blackheartsgirl · 17/10/2021 19:30

Phenergan is hit and miss for me. I have to take at least 30 mg before it has any drowsy effect. I have adhd and awful sleep issues which doesn't help. It doesn't render.me incapable and I can wakeup and snap out of it without feeling groggy. It does make me a little tired the next day sometimes though

As someone else said check which ones you have - I cant remember the exact strength but its the x2 tablets for a dose rather than x1 tab as it gives you more control First times using it (as you won't have tolerance) I would have 1/2 a tablet maybe 30 mins before boarding - it should just take the edge off and relax you rather than knocking you out. For me, I would be fine once off the plane with that.
CCSS15 · 17/10/2021 19:38

Just to add, its the 25mg. So I would have half of that 30 mins before flying

Animood · 17/10/2021 19:45

Phenergen is an old fashioned antihistamine that makes you drowsy.

I've taken both phenergen And diazepam in the past.

Diazepam is much much better. Not saying this to scare you just saying it so you can mentally prepare.

LizzieSiddal · 17/10/2021 19:49

You should most definitely have a “trial run” of the medication. You should never take a new medication on a plane for the first time as you don’t know if you will react badly to it.

userxx · 17/10/2021 20:43

Thought so! My mum loved the stuff. You'd probably get in trouble for dosing kids up today but anything went in the 70's.

GorgeousGoldies · 17/10/2021 20:47

Thanks to everyone for your great advice.

I’m further embarrassed to admit that I’ve been on a fear of flying course, which helped initially, but I’ve slipped back to sheer terror now.

Can’t believe all the 70s Mums dosing their children up (well, maybe I can!)

Anyway, I’ve taken half a 25mg tablet to try it out tonight. Should sleep well for a change 😊

Thanks again.

Kezzie200 · 17/10/2021 20:53

I've used it to help sleep but not when I've had to work or drive the next day.

For flying, talk to a pilot. There's a few on tiktok you can follow. They wouldn't do it if it was dangerous. It's good to ask them questions and listen to answers.

LizzieSiddal · 17/10/2021 20:57

Sorry the fear Of Flying course didn’t help long term.

Hope you sleep well tonight!
